Mrs. Alice Day, 24, seeks a divorce from George W. Day and custody of a daughter born at the hospital two days ago. The couple married May 1, 1937, in the same city. In Muscatine, Hawkeye Button Co. plans to reopen on a curtailed basis Monday after a strike, with full capacity expected next week.
The three day national meeting of Hardanger Laged opened Friday in Humboldt with 100 registered attendees. Mayor Albert Rogers gave the welcome, national president Samuel Jordan of Minneapolis responded, and professors John May and Arthur Paulson of St Dwiart College spoke.
More than 6500 entries were placed for the two day Hancock county Junior Achievement show. Blue ribbons were awarded in colt club work and girls home furnishing work. Alpha Olson was named county health champion.
Alicia Mei gaard daughter of Dr and Mrs B A Meigaard of Sioux City heads to New York today before sailing Wednesday on the French liner Normandie despite the European war scare.
Iowa City report says Donald Deaton station attendant identified two bandits who robbed the station and a truck driver. He viewed photos of two escaped Michigan State Reformatory inmates, naming Farrel Leight, 15, captured, and Jesse W. Weaver, 77, still at large.
Sioux City safety commissioner Harold N. Sturgeon told the city council that too many officers are off sick and many are off duty more hours than they worked in a year. The remarks followed John Conway’s complaint that beer tavern enforcement is hampered by lack of orders and that an officer was reprimanded up the chain for raiding a tavern without proper authorization.
Twenty young Des Moines business men gathered at Boyce's Uptown Cafe to hear details of the Des Moines river valley project a proposed dam near Madrid to back up a large lake for recreation flood control and power. Lloyd Waddell executive secretary L S Hill sponsor and Jed Cutler project board member outlined benefits of the plan.
Theodore Salemink a 69 year old Muscatine County farmer was killed at his home when an angry bull butted and trampled him for about 65 feet Leo Salemink 14 son was home alone and alerted neighbors after failing to find his father. Neighbors herded the bull into the barn to end the threat.
Charles Leslie Holon, 61, of alia, died today in an ambulance while being transported to University Hospital at Jews City for typhoid fever. His body was taken to L. A. Jones funeral home in Washington and will be shipped to Monmouth, Kentucky, for burial.
In Minneapolis a slaying of attorney David Theodore Mellin is linked to a later shooting of Mrs. Gunnar Ellison. Mellin, 68, was killed outside his bedroom window. Ellison's wife was wounded in the ankle as they returned home. A suspect known to have quarrelled with Mellin and Ellison was seized. Wires to the Ellison home had been severed and Mellin had acted as attorney for Allison, a builder pursuing action against a homeowner indebted to Ellison.
Harold Ben Nicola of West Chester is jailed in Washington county awaiting arraignment on burglary charges. He was caught entering Hoover and Porter General Store with a found key and a sack to haul goods. A search of his home recovered numerous stolen items including food, toiletries, medicines, and a 100 pound bag of sugar.
The State University of Iowa distributed 1,730 dur degrees out of a total of 1,780 degrees awarded in 1939 commencement ceremonies held in Iowa City.
Editor notes Washington schools plan for fall enrollment and pupil distribution. Washington junior college offers two years of standard college work with options for secretarial training or rural teacher training. The paper discusses cost benefits and the choice between junior college and continuing high school to age eighteen.
University of Iowa schedules completion of three building projects in fall. Dormitory additions for 400 plus students expand Hillcrest and Currier Hall capacity, with 222 more at Hillcrest and about 500 at Currier Hall after a 400000 dollar addition. A new radio building will house WSUI equipment, transmitter, studios, offices, and classrooms for radio courses.
An entire Bernek family, John and Mrs Bernek and their two daughters Helen 5 and Dorothy 3, were found shot dead in their St Louis residence. Police say they appeared to have been dead since last night. neighbors heard shots but mistook them for car backfiring.
A review of records shows that 1999 stood as the second largest numeral in the institution’s history, indicating a notable milestone in its historical data set.
Washington county 4 H boys showed the champion county club group of ten purebred hogs at the state fair. Raymond Bell placed fourth in a class of thirty two litters, Stanley Chabal fifth and Paul Henson eighth. Stan ley Chabal also placed fifth in the purebred Duroboar class with Mey mond Bell eighth. Several other top ten finishes came from the team with Robert Foster, Cleo McCoy and Paul Benson in Hamp class. Market pigs saw Washington county exhibitors earn blue red and white ribbons, with Marion Timmins and Richard Flynn among top placers in carcass events. Final results were not yet available.
State patrol official Benjamin Bentzineer reported 34 persons took the regular driving tests yesterday. Seven failed the written exams and one vehicle inspection failure noted. Five under 14 sought permits, two tested for chauffeur driving, four instruction permits issued. Three youths 16 to 18 attempted driving school bus tests.

Vernon Braxner, 19, of Kalona, was bruised and scraped yesterday in Wellman after being struck on a street by a car. Police report indicates driver remained at the scene and cooperating with investigators.
