James B. Kanealy a 31 year old Ames oil station operator died from a nose infection that began after he pulled a hair from his nose. Doctors linked the irritation to a streptococcal infection leading to sinus thrombosis. Kanealy born in Perry Illinois had lived in Ames about three months.
Everett Gleason 40 a farm trucker near Stratford died from chest injuries after his truck collided with a gravel truck driven by Ben Bjorsen of Dayton at an intersection. His son Lowell 13 suffered a mild concussion and was treated in the local hospital.
The Iowa district west Missouri Synod Lutherans voted to build a student center at Ames near Iowa State College for no more than 325 000. A site was bought in 1937 for 3700, with 21 500 offered by the National Lutheran Education Association. 17 800 remains on hand plus a 5 500 association grant if construction starts before May 1, 1940.
A. F. Grover announced that over 2,000 steel bins will be shipped to 25 Iowa counties next week for sealing corn under government liquidation of loans. The bins, part of a 60-carload order already received, will store less than 6 million bushels, a fraction of total corn sealed statewide.
Darrel Potter, 46, a local jeweler in Independence, died by suicide after a car he drove collided with J. C. Regan’s vehicle. Regan and his wife were injured lightly. Potter took poison then called the sheriff. The coroner said an inquest would be held.
The A. M. E. church announces tag day on Saturday August 26 in Washington for the congregation’s benefit. The mayor and Chamber of Commerce have given consent for the day. The Washington church has a small membership but aims to advance Christian training among the colored community.
Washington county reports 6 477 registered state license cars this year versus 5 286 last year an increase of 1 191. There are 50 more county trucks today than a year ago with figures 753 and 703. President Roosevelt said Europe’s war may be averted and he cannot decide yet on calling a special session of Congress to revise neutrality laws. He awaits replies to peace messages to Germany Poland and Italy while noting the gravity of the current international sit uation.
Leslie M. Eicher of the state highway commission said no definite action has been taken toward paving North Second Avenue north of the underpass or the cross over to connect with road No 1. The project is not yet ready for bids and officials doubt work can start this fall. A preliminary survey has been done and bids are to be received by the highway commission at Ames.
Thousands of children flood Des Moines as the 58th annual Iowa state fair officially opens. Children under 15 admitted free and officials expect record grand stand attendance with band music radio acts and circus attractions on the first day.
Ames Iowa August 25 W R Whitfield poultry specialist Iowa State College Extension says turkey producers will not be greatly affected by a one week earlier Thanksgiving but will face losses from unfinished birds on the market. Rising chicken production this year may weaken turkey prices though effects on the final market price remain uncertain.
Sept 6 maintenance surfacing planned on No 22 across the north part of Washington county and on No 1 from west of West Chester north to Wellman. The mileage to be improved is 28.4 miles.
Des Moines reports at the state fair livestock show, the Washington county group leads with a Duroc litter of four pigs, Raymond Bell of Washington places fourth in Hampshire, and Robert Poster of Washington finishes seventh.
A Madrid Iowa delegation asked Governor Wilson to intervene in a labor dispute at the Scandia coal company keeping 400 miners idle since May 4. They urged a settlement before school opens due to poverty and depleted food credit.

Forrest Walker will sing a Dat itone solo with the concert hand, and the Washington Concert group has given free performances each week, earning community appreciation.
