Death of G C McCaleb at 72 in Ainsworth Nebraska
George C McCaleb 72 died at his Ainsworth home after a lingering illness. He had been bedfast a week and ill for years. Funeral plans await two sons on each coast. Survived by wife Stella, five children Leo Lyle George Jr Eugene Mildred and sister Annie Simpson. He belonged to Ainsworth Methodist church and Masonic lodge.

Start Work on Track Today for Labor Day Auto Races
Track work began today near town for the Legion Labor Day program at the Andy Blattner farm. Bill Brown, in charge of gallopies, says the track will be ready in a day or two and invites Washington entrants to test it. Stewart & Crane enter a Model T Ford that won a similar event at West Liberty, with Les Itaymound slated to drive it locally.

Three Washington Men Injured in Grandview Crash
Three Washington men were injured when Schmidt’s eleven year old car crashed into the bridge railing on primary highway 92 three miles west of Grandview. Lee Levert, 50, is critically hurt with a punctured lung and crushed chest. Rudolph Schmidt, 47, may have fractured ribs. Al Powers bruised but esperado to be released soon. They were taken to Bellevue hospital in Muscatine.

Des Moines August 28 UP The Iowa state liquor control commission reported that the net profit for the fiscal year ending June 30 was 2 590 825. The previous year net profit was 2 143 296. Liquor sales totaled 11 40 747 while cost of the liquor was 6 018 859.

Municipal Band Winds Up Park Concert Season
Washington Municipal band reelects T Sorden as director for three seasons. New officers include Mua Ser vice president Everett Kurhal jr secretary James Pirney treasurer Lester Muck and board members Jess W Radda Mile W Steele sr Eugene 8 Thomas Tom Gray and Stewart Bell. The group presented fourteen Saturday concerts ten Wednesday evenings in Central Park plus Centennial events and booster trips. The band traded concerts with Sigourney and Mr Pleasant and played at Yen Ruogis in Sigourney. Last Friday the entire personnel performed in Des Moines under Milo Sorden at the state fair and received six consecutive invitations to participate on fair day.

Sweet potato grows inside old jug discovered in garden
In Rom Liameey’s garden at L208 N, a brown jug neck held a sweet potato grown through its hollow. Hameey cut his finger on crockery while digging, revealing the unusual find. The curio is now on display in the Journal office lobby.

Waived Preliminary in Breaking and Entering Case

He was bound over to the September grand jury with bonds set at $1000.
