Des Moines Federal District Judge Charles A. Dewey disclosed he lacks legal authority to conduct marriage ceremonies. He said he’s often asked to officiate but frequently must decline due to this constraint.
A 100 member local Legion patrol is organized to deter trouble during the state American Legion convention in Waterloo from September 1 to 4. J Jensen heads the patrol, announced Friday.
President Randolph Pyle announced a mortgage reduction from sixty five thousand to thirty five thousand at the annual Town meeting of the Society of Friends, held in Oskaloosa. Near-term savings cited.
Des Moines residents heard a municipal court case about a cat named Fluffie and a neighbor who fatally wounded it with a gun. Glenn Brown was fined $10 by Judge Ralph L. Powers for discharging firearms within city limits.
Six Oelwein youths aged nine to twelve meet for nearly two months to do fancy needlework including lazy daisy stitches and French knots. Members include Junior Thorpe Miles Warren Loban Floyd Shephard Jack McDonnell and Boby Hoffman.
Mrs Augusta Readher of Creston, aged 92, hired a taxi for a 100 mile ride to Council Bluffs after agreeing to a fare of 15 dollars. Officers found her in a Council Bluffs hotel and had a physician treat her before the journey home to live with Mrs Matt Fell a denghtay.
John Pelz an auto salesman was seriously injured when his car swerved north of Williams and overturned. He suffered a fractured spine and remains in hospital under careful observation.
Des Moines scandal unfolds as Dora Jones aged 68 pleads not guilty in municipal court to assault and battery after Fred Warway aged 35 claims she struck him over a cigarette offer. Jones warns she would strike again if offered another cigaret.
One man died in the oil truck wreck and another was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The vehicle careened down a hill before veering off the road and exploded, with flames spreading along the pavement as firefighters struggled.
Audubon and Omaha cases led to ringleader HIows implicated in raids on western Iowa clothing stores. Lake Mills cloth ing store looted during the wave. Four were sentenced in connection with the robberies.

Ardell Geret of Riverside topped senior Aberdeen Angus heifers while Lloyd Marek of Washington placed third. Yorkshire pig wins included Joe Dougall and Donald Rinner taking top two spots in boars and sows. Edward Chabal of Riverside placed second in Tamworth or Yorkshire Fat Barrows. Wellman 4 Hs placed in Fat Barrows with Howard and Leo Yoder notable in Tamworth Yorkshire and market litter events. Johnson county group led Fat Barrow county groups with Greene county winning the livestock judging contest for 4 H club boys.
Shortly before noon today the Mangold car and radio service shop on North Iowa avenue reported a backyard bonfire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze in the back yard.
Olds Aug 24 Albert Overly depot agent for the M and S L railroad for about thirty years killed himself with a shotgun at 6 45 this morning. He was about 65 and had been unwell the act was blamed on worry. He is survived by his wife formerly Rhoda Calloway married about 20 years ago and a brother Clarence at Pinesville Ohio Funeral services pending word from the brother.
Dr R K Atchison of Rimersburg Pa who attended the 1895 academy class reunion will preach at the Associate Presbyterian church. Services are set for 11 am and 7 30 pm with firemen responding as a precaution and fire put out with chemicals.
Clarence Fulton learned of his mother's death by a long distance call after a nationwide search aided by Northwestern Bell operators radiowave stations police officials Yellowstone National Park staff and others. A Los Angeles radio station broadcast the break message guiding Fulton to contact Washington Iowa operators. The search began with relatives in Utah and Oregon and involved park rangers and car tracking across 20 000 people in the park.
Emperor Haile Selassie addresses Ethiopians urging village warnings by three gunshots and church bells when Italian planes raid. British legation signs passports for 35 Indian families to Bombay as threats loom. Europe grooms for war with troop and ship movements and penalties for aggressors.
Washington county outlines a new school year with over 100 rural teachers named by County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill. Some schools lack reported assignments and two schools in Washington and Brighton townships will close this year. Names cover Lime Creek Two to South Prairie with teachers listed for each station.
Funeral services for Mrs. George M. Fulton will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 30 at Sherman's funeral home. Clarence Fulton, her son, is on his way home from Santa Barbara California where he was located late yesterday.
At the 1895 Washington Academy reunion in Washington Iowa, a note of Washington's Chief Executive, Governor Clyde Herring, Congressman Edward Eicher, and Mayor R. Lytle was read to forty year graduates. Roosevelt, Herring, and Eicher sent letters and telegrams wishing a joyful gathering and long friendship.
Eighteen of twenty seven classmates from the 1895 Washington Academy reunion attended here with members traveling from several states. The event included a class yell led by Ralph Livingston and greetings from President Roosevelt, Governor Herring, Congressman Eicher, and Mayor Lloyd Lytle.

Washington a D C August 24 Congress neared adjournment tonight as both houses met early. The Senate passed the administration neutrality bill 77 to 2 to isolate the United States from foreign arms shipments for six months and sent it to the White House. A row over Senator James Pope of Idaho prompted LaFollette to move a rebuke. The flood control bill stalled in conference and tax legislation was kept alive to delay departure.
Arnold Brown, sentenced for lewd acts in the presence of children and committed to Ft. Madison, has his sentence suspended to allow admission to the psychopathic hospital at Iowa City for examination and observation. The suspension hinges on the examination results and was granted in response to Judge Frank Bechly’s request. Brown was moved to Iowa City today.
Mrs R C DuBois of Chicago plans to leave Tuesday after a two week stay. She has been visiting her mother Mrs J K Young and her sisters Mrs I B Hunt Mrs Fred Neiswanger and Mrs Pollock Wallace during the visit.
Woodbury county grand jury issues three new indictments naming Assistant Attorney General Walter Maley Sheriff Ralph Rippey and Ray Harrison. Maley and Harrison face conspiracy to obstruct justice and interference with justice counts while Rippey is accused of conspiracy and bribery. The panel may wrap up after next Monday’s ouster trial of Sioux City Mayor W D Hayes.
