Interstate 80 overpass damage prompts 2–3 hour closure

An overpass one mile west of Anita will close on Interstate 80 from U.S. 71 to Adair for two to three hours to repair damage from a crane being hauled by a semi. The bridge sustained about 80,000 dollars in damage. no damage to the crane or driver Lawrence Miller of Hamburg was reported.

Iowa appeals shift on property tax orders

Twenty of Iowa's 118 assessing districts filed protests against tentative property tax equalization orders issued by the state Revenue Department. The 15 counties and five cities expect hearings. reasons include rising property values and non retroactive increases. Weather returns showers tonight and Friday

A weather forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms tonight and Friday. The low will be in the mid 60s with a high near 80 on Friday. Winds shift southeast at 15 to 20 mph. Rain chances are about 30 percent for tonight and Friday.

VFW rejects move to admit women members

Delegates at the VFW national convention voted against changing bylaws to allow women, preserving a fighting men’s image. National Commander R D Smith had urged admission, citing women in combat zones and casualties, but the vote drew strong opposition led by James Van Zandt who condemned President Carter’s stance. A resolution opposing the Panama Canal treaty was also adopted.

Washington Music Boosters plan two fund drives

The Washington Music Boosters announced plans for two fund raisers to buy new high school band uniforms. About 40 parents, directors, and student reps met at Washington High School to approve a National Bank of Washington offer to fund 200 community dressed dolls to be auctioned after display at the bank's new building grand opening.

Curtis named to Iowa Vocational Education Council

Vance Ends Talks With China Leaders
