The Washington Municipal Swimming Pool will close for the season on Saturday with the final swim from 1 to 5 30 p.m. August 27. Pool manager Mike Gray reports just over 30 000 swims for the year, a slight decline from last year blamed on cool August weather. After closure, the pool will be drained for winter maintenance.
Police Chief Kenneth Bauer asks Washington bicycle owners to visit the Public Safety Center before Sept. 10 if their bike was stolen in the past year. Recovered bikes held unclaimed for long periods may be returned if described accurately. after Sept. 10 the remaining bikes will be sold or disposed of.
James L. Walter, 25, an Iowa State Penitentiary inmate, was stabbed in a prison restroom near the library at about 6 35 p m Thursday. He reported to the prison hospital with another inmate’s help and was treated at Sacred Heart Hospital Fort Madison before returning to the infirmary in stable condition.
Pella Iowa plans a major hospital remodeling and expansion after a fund drive reached 3 million. Chairman Gary VerMeer said 1.5 million came from 14 local businesses and families who challenged the community to match it. The drive, over 11 weeks, surpassed the initial goal as residents hoped to attract new doctors to central Iowa.
New York UPI reports 93.4 percent of mail from 66 senators opposed the Panama Canal treaty and 6.6 percent favored it. Conducted by the American Conservative Union, the poll was released Thursday by Rep. Phillip Crane at the Young Americans for Freedom convention. About 100000 letters were used.
UPI reports US District Judge Frank Johnson of Alabama, named by President Carter to head the FBI, is hospitalized for an aneurysm surgery. Relatives told the Montgomery Advertiser the operation was to take place at 7:30 a.m. CDT, performed by renowned surgeon Michael deBakey, after diagnosis at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital earlier this week.
Iowa plans to train 50 state officers to curb smoky truck stacks. The Iowa Department of Environmental Quality will team with Public Safety and Transportation to equip 25 troopers and 25 truck enforcement officers to detect excessive smoke. They can issue warnings and require owners to fix the vehicle, without fines.
Heavy rain drenched central Iowa with amounts up to six inches in areas as a line of thunderstorms moved through Thursday night. Des Moines area reported two to three inches, with Indianola receiving six inches. Flooding affected streets and underpasses, several intersections were blocked, and power outages affected about 1,000 in Des Moines. No injuries reported.
The Mid-Prairie Community School District Board of Education met Aug 15 in special session to review bids for an exhaust and dust collection system at the high school gym. It accepted the low bid from Universal Climate Control, Coralville, for 22,429 dollars. The West Chester window project was not decided, with plans to inspect competing window bids at several buildings.

The Iowa safety department prepares for a new handgun permit law requiring a sheriff issued permit before purchase and a three day cooling off period. The plan creates two concealed permit types professional and non professional with uniform fees five dollars initial and two dollars renewal, statewide validity, mandatory firearms safety courses, fingerprinting, and meetings with sheriffs to explain the program.
President Carter said working women must share responsibility for states failing to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. He noted lawmakers claimed support but bowed to pressure from working women in his district. The ceremony marked the 57th anniversary of women’s suffrage and included a presentation of a pen to Hazel Hallinan, who chained herself to the White House fence during the ERA push.
A temporary county land preservation commission held the first in a series of meetings Thursday night to craft recommendations on land preservation policy. Under state law the county commission includes three members from soil conservation, three from the board of supervisors, and three from city mayors and councilmen. Elmer Schneider chairs with Howard Bohr as vice chair and Jim Frier as secretary. Members include Donald Hahn, Larry Shalla, Jerry King, Raymond Moyer, Ralph Marshall, and Robert Pearx, with one mayor or council member from the county yet to be named. Recommendations due by July 1, 1978 to the state commission with the final report due March 1, 1979. Topics include preserving land for food and fiber, growth trends, local plans, and site decisions for facilities. The group will meet again September 12.
