Break-ins Reported in Washington County
City police and sheriff's officers investigated multiple break-ins across Washington County. At Messer Oil Company offices in Washington items including tires were stolen. Two Route 2 homes, the Howard Miller residence and Ruth Crayne's home, were entered with various thefts including antiques and gas from a barrel. The Mark Middleburg property near Kalona and the George Sherman home on South Iowa Avenue also reported thefts, including two bicycles from a garage.

Des Moines Fire Claims Three Lives at East Side Building
A predawn blaze gutted a three story building housing a grocery and 11 apartments in Des Moines. Firemen recovered two bodies tentatively identified as George Porter and Phyllis Watson. Jeff Jones, 14, remains missing while one resident was injured jumping to safety. Fire officials worked for hours as neighbors described the scene and the owner asserted the building met fire codes.
