Rural safety survey planned in Washington County

The Washington County Farm Bureau Women launch a rural road safety survey led by county rural safety chairman Mrs. R. Dean Luers. Fifteen township couples will drive roads, note hazards, and mark issues on township maps to guide removal of safety problems, with state and county officials endorsing the program and deadlines set for map return by September 20.

Plane crash kills 58 Marines in Hong Kong harbor

A U.S. Marine transport C130 Hercules crashed and exploded shortly after takeoff in Hong Kong harbor. Of 71 aboard, 58 Marines died, many inside the submerged fuselage, with 13 survivors rescued as divers later recovered charred bodies. The aircraft had been in Hong Kong for rest and recuperation from Vietnam duties.

Municipal Band to End Summer Season in Central Park

The Washington Municipal Band wraps up its summer schedule with a final concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Central Park under Dick Balard. Vocal solos by Mrs. Tom Brown and piano by Ronald Wise highlight the program, including selections from My Fair Lady and Moon River, plus marches and Disney tunes. An ice cream social hosted by the Kiwanis Club starts at 5:30 p.m. in Central Park. if rain, it moves to City Hall.

Plan Tryouts Monday for Jr. High Chorus

Eighth and ninth graders at Washington Junior High School are invited to attend chorus tryouts next Monday August 30. The session includes returning chorus members and others who wish to sing, with participants reporting to the music room after registration. Mrs. Dean Stanley will direct the chorus.

Area 4-H members earn ribbons at Iowa State Fair

Three area 4-H members earned recognition in swine and sheep divisions. Kathy Horn of Washington and Joe White of Ainsworth won blue ribbons in market hog entries, with Joe advancing to the final rounds for hogs and pens. Becky Berdo earned purple showmanship and multiple blue ribbons in Suffolk Ram, Ewe, and Yearling lamb classes, with top placements in several Suffolk categories. Hawkeye Acres of Crawfordsville showed the grand champion Angus female and multiple champion bulls, with ownership listed as J. Robert Carr of Crawfordsville and Tom Huston of Columbus Junction.

Brighton school gains new look for opening term

Maintenance crews renovated the Brighton elementary building in the Washington Community School District this summer. The work included painting, new partitions, a hallway connecting the main building to the gym, and reconfigured classrooms to include six rooms plus spaces for audio visual work an kindergarten. Outside, vacant lots west of the gym were cleared for a playground after blacktopping. Teenage fashion show at county fairgrounds tonight

A teen style show is scheduled at the Washington County Fairgrounds in the exhibit building starting at 8 30 p m. The public is invited with no admission charge. The event is sponsored by Seifert s and Joe Falk Clothing stores of Washington.

Andy Williams Leads Iowa State Fair Show at Des Moines

Des Moines reports Andy Williams headlined the Iowa State Fair attractions for the opening day, joined by the Osmond Brothers and a Chicago troupe. Pork Queen Linda Barrett of Granger, 17, plans Iowa State University, while grand champion beef auctions raise funds for local youths. Hereford and Angus winners include Leo Palmer and John Gottfried with notable bids by voters and meat companies.

U S B 52 bombers from Guam struck a Viet Cong installation five miles north of Chu Lai as Marines from Jackson Mississippi significantly boosted South Viet Nam forces. Bien Hoa base suffered a mortar attack with 32 rounds. 47 planes damaged but minimal casualties. At Da Nang and Chu Lai Marine engineers arrived as total U S force reaches about 88 600 with pending expansion to 125 000.
