The Burlington municipal airport, completed at a cost of one million dollars, has been officially transferred to the city by the Civil Aeronautics Administration. Mayor Max A. Conrad announced all installations are now finished.
Des Moines report says state canning plants use prisoners of war and farm laborers to prevent crop losses due to labor shortages. About 220 POWs have been assigned to plants in Waverly Ackley Hampton Grundy Center and Reinbeck with 25 more to report at Wapello this week. Muscatine tomato plant to receive 150 prisoners later in the month.
At the Iona meeting in OsKaloosa the annual report on White's Manual Labor Institute described Quakerdale Orphanage for Boys at New Providence. Twenty two to twenty nine boys were housed there this year at a total cost of 15000 dollars with five thousand dollars provided by supporting agencies. Farms owned by the institute yielded a net profit of more than 15000 dollars.
Gale Johnson, a Fort Dodge mechanic, files suit for 10000 against Fort Dodge and police officials including Chief Reverett Markle and Captain W L Gormally and bonding companies. He claims officers arrested him at his home without a warrant at 2:30 a m on July 17, held him 24 hours, and denied a hearing or bond.
The 7 piece United States Marine Band will perform for the seventy eighth national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Des Moines from September 10 to 15. About 890 veterans remain from the Civil War era and officials expect 2000 attendees. Five affiliated G A R groups and their auxiliaries will also hold national conventions in Des Moines during the six day event.
At the state convention in Sioux City yesterday the Iowa American Legion elected Sagzau of Denison as state commander. He works in the insurance business and succeeds Dr. Charles R. Logan of Keokuk as head of the organization.
Bertha Fladung of Seventy-six township topped the baby beeves and Duroc swine divisions at the Washington county 4-H fair. The 4-H veteran plans to take her three calves to the Chicago International show. Judge J. C. Holbert praised the young raisers amid larger crowds.
Bertha Fladung was named the outstanding 4-H girl in Washington County for the past year by a committee led by Isabelle Combs and Mrs. George Dare. The award cites her oven products record and extensive farm home and garden work, including 41 meals, numerous breads and cakes, 1385 quarts canned, and 591 hours in chores and fields. Mary Wittetoe was named assistant oven products girl as 14 teams from nine clubs demonstrated today at the 4-H achievement show.
Moscow reports Soviet forces push south toward Bucharest within 170 miles as German Romanian troops retreat to the Galati gap. Romanian prisoners say German fire killed many officers to halt the retreat while the five day Romanian offensive gains momentum. Other Soviet units advance near Somaza and Tartu driving through Estonia and Riga’s southeast area, capturing towns and repelling counter-attacks.
President C W Tucker of the Chamber of Commerce calls a Friday evening meeting in the Y community room at eight to plan Washingtons V day observance. He urges heads of civic patriotic or religious groups or their representatives to attend to coordinate a proper celebration of victory.

A Colonial Baking bread truck driven by 20 year old Robert Karl Daurte of Mt Pleasant and a car owned by Norbert Te Bockhorst were in a collision near Richmond yesterday as the truck reversed after passing a corner. Car damage around 200 dollars and truck damage about 25 dollars. Mrs Te Bockhorst had a bruised knee and arm while three year old Thomas Wayne Te Bockhorst suffered a cut lip.
Mrs. Anna Lenninger received word that her son Pvt. Edward F. Lenninger was wounded in action in France and is in an English hospital. He reportedly suffered a leg wound from a German tank and a broken leg, with an expected hospital stay of about six weeks.

Bulgaria sought peace terms, while King Michael announced acceptance of Russian armistice terms and the army moved to expel German forces from Transylvania.
