Washington County chapter of the American Cancer Society will end fundraising on August 31. Additional $312 is needed to reach the county goal of $10,873 for 1977. Contributions are urged to be mailed to Mrs. Shirley Steele in Washington, the chapter treasurer.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors authorized a 12,300 payment to Gronert Electronics Corp. of Des Moines as the first installment on a 33,000 contract for a high-band radio tower and related gear at the Public Safety Center. They also arranged OE student trainee positions at the courthouse and issued the county's first Sunday carryout beer permit to Kampers Korner at Lake Darling.
Lester Wayne Reiman 30 pleaded guilty in Washington County District Court to assault and battery, a reduced offense from lascivious acts with a child. Judge L.R. Carson sentenced him to 30 days with 12 days credit and suspended the remaining term pending good behavior.
City officials plan a Wednesday preliminary review of 15 applicants for the city clerk position. Clerk Lloyd Robertson, retiring this year, will join Mayor Harold Johnson and the finance committee to assess credentials from 11 out-of-area candidates and four locals, with top candidates to be invited for interviews.
The Washington County Attorney warns of out-of-town repairmen who take payments for house repairs and fail to return. Complaints come mainly from older residents. Call 319-653-3322 with information and insist on established firms with references before work begins.
In Des Moines, Attorney General Turner seeks prison letters from Fort Madison inmates via reporter Les Peck of the Burlington Hawk Eye. The paper and editor John McCormally resist, citing First Amendment protections. Turner warns of subpoenas for deposition as readers learn of the Church of the New Song dispute and a jail escape and coverage continues amid weather outlook.
Iowa Public Safety Commissioner Charles W. Larson urged the Iowa Transportation Commission to adopt the former point system for suspensions and revocations. He argued it sharpens warning of license jeopardy, noting earlier reductions in fatalities when the policy was in effect while DOT data through Aug. 15 showed a 27.7 percent drop in deaths from last year.
The Washington Education Association will hold its annual fall dinner on Wednesday August 24 at 7 p.m. at Jack Hamiltons. Special guests include Bob Gilchrist Iowa State Education Association president and Rachel Stewart Geode Universe Unit past president. Officers listed are Sharon Merz president Gary Collins vice president Kathy Hunt secretary and Dean Knight.
Des Moines Senator John Culver signals leaning toward backing the Panama Canal treaty but warns passage by a two thirds Senate vote will be extremely difficult. He cites potential delays impacting U S security and explains the issue could provoke intense debate and regional tensions in Latin America and the hemisphere. He notes Joint Chiefs support and urges negotiated terms that are politically and economically acceptable.
Nearly 3 000 exhibits across home improvement food and nutrition clothing science mechanics and art and photography were judged before August 18 with viewing open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through August 28 on the southwest grounds.
