Russians plan moon landing in soft touch aim

Soviet space officials said preparations for a soft lunar landing are underway with no target date, while Zond 3 has returned 25 photographs of the moon’s far side. Gemini 5 mission nears midcourse in high altitude flight

On day three of the eight day Gemini 10 mission astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles Conrad push toward the goal as they set up a four part maneuver to chase a mock Agena target. They report heavy workload but remain optimistic and continue tracking objectives while monitoring oxygen pressure and orbit progress.

Beef champion steer sold at Iowa State Fair auction

Winterset restaurant owner pays $1.60 per pound for Bruce Alleman’s grand champion baby beef steer, 937 pounds, bringing $1,446.40 with plans to slaughter for a Winterset cafe. Open show grand champion Angus from Osceola and other fair winners are noted along with attendance figures and National Guard patrols amid weather concerns.

Mrs Eldridge Dies At 93 In Washington County

Mrs Jennie V Eldridge 93 of 602 West Washington Street died Sunday August 22 1965 at 530 pm in Washington County Hospital after a weeklong illness Funeral will be Tuesday at 2 pm at Jones Funeral Home with Rev Stan Woeste officiating Burial will be Woodlawn Cemetery She was born July 5 1872 in Cherokee County Kansas daughter of Hugh and Liza McCausland moved to Living Lake Community northeast of Washington at age two attended Washington Academy and married December 24 1890 to William S Eldridge who died March 4 1954 She was a member of Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church Survivors include one daughter Mrs Wayne Simmerman of Washington three sons John Earl Indianola Howard B St Louis MO and William Glen Phoenix AZ seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Fire at Don Downey Furniture Store Near Richland

Richland and Hedrick fire departments responded at midnight to a blaze at Don Downey Furniture on highway 78 west of Richland. Mr and Mrs Downey, whose living quarters adjoin the store, woke to smoke in their bedroom. Fire likely started in air conditioner wiring and burned through kitchen and hall ceilings, causing substantial smoke damage some insured.

Kalona man Zano F Schillig dies at 76

Zano F Schillig of Kalona died Sunday at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City after a short illness. Funeral at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rich mond Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Snell. rosary Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Kalona. Burial in Schnoebelen Cemetery near Riverside. Born Richmond November 11, 1888, married Isabel McManus June 25, 1917 (d. 1962). Survived by three daughters, one son, five grandchildren, two sisters and two brothers.

Iowa Supreme Court Rules on Reapportionment Jurisdiction

The Iowa Supreme Court unanimously held that state courts may rule on legislative reapportionment disputes. It overruled a Polk County ruling that federal courts should handle all such cases, stating federal courts should yield to state courts if the state courts act promptly.

Iowa Weather: Cloudy Skies With Showers Tuesday

United Press International reports considerable cloudiness in Iowa Tuesday with showers and thunderstorms affecting about 30 percent of the northwest portion. Warmer tonight and Tuesday with lows 50 to 55 in the north and 55 to 60 in the south. Tuesday highs 80 to 85.

Four Killed Sunday in Iowa Traffic Toll Rises

Six people died on Iowa roads over the weekend, lifting the 1965 toll to 432. Among the fatalities were Kenneth Jeyne near Decorah after a crash on a gravel road, Elaine Miller near Waukon, Alfred Knudson of Hampton, and Susanna Haral of Kahoka, Missouri, in separate accidents. In Des Moines a three car pileup on Highway 141 killed Wendall Glen Sheldon and injured others.

Bombing Near China Hits Ban Trach Complex in Viet Nam

UPI reports American jets dropped 250 tons of bombs and rockets on North Viet Nam Sunday, hitting the Ban Trach hydroelectric plant and dam near Hanoi and striking Highway 6 close to China. Ground actions slowed after a high tempo week. convoys reached Kontum and helicopters airlifted Vietnamese battalions into the Mekong delta amid fighting with Viet Cong forces.
