Des Moines reports first six months of this year show retail sales tax collections at 10,846,254.28 dollars, up by 1,098,493 from the 1943 period. Officials note the 2 percent tax reflects more than 50 million dollars in increased retail activity, despite 5,960 fewer firms reporting than last year.
The Iowa and Nebraska governors addressed the Iowa department of the American Legion at Sioux City. The meeting focused on protecting returning service members and aiding veterans. A 1505 dollar contract for a 4 H club record book was awarded to Matt Parrott and Sons Printing Co. of Waterloo.

The district announces two new officials as openings arise for the public schools starting Sept 5. Superintendent Schell replaces W A Erbe on leave to join the United States navy. Shaw becomes high school principal after a two year Army Air Corps discharge. he previously taught at Sioux Center Iowa and led Clinton for seven years.
4-H achievement show judging began this afternoon with livestock at the armory and girls exhibits in the Methodist church basement. Open house for the livestock department runs 7 to 9:30 p m at the armory. an 7 o'clock auction at the church will sell oven goods baked by 4-H girls to raise funds for a war bond.
President Claude W. Tucker of the Washington Chamber of Commerce announces a Friday 8 p.m. meeting at the YMCA community room to discuss local Victory Day plans. He urges heads of civic patriotic and religious groups or their representatives to attend for a representative gathering and possible program adoption.

Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza H. Sigler widow of George G. Sigler are set for Thursday at 4 30 p m at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Rev Floyd Shaw of Pocahogtas Iowa. Burial follows in Elm Grove cemetery. She died in Denver Colorado where she had lived since leaving this locale about twenty years ago. Her husband died here April 14 1920.
Y W C A girls who have joined the summer program will present a program at eight o'clock tomorrow evening in the Y Y community room. Jean Atchison has directed summer activities at the Y W and will supervise the presentation.
Wilbur Chandler resigns as Washington County extension director after five and a half years to become regional field man for the Farm Bureau in Iowa north central area covering 19 counties. Headquarters yet to be chosen among Webster City Eldora Boone Ames or Nevada.
Parents and friends are invited to attend the S o'clock program tomorrow evening. The event will include a puppet show a marionette show and a dramatization. There will be a display of work done by Class members during the summer fond handwork done in class.
J W Chandler, county extension director for five years, has resigned to join the Farm Bureau in north central Iowa as a field man. He expects to start the new position next month.
Private Jesse Harvey of Washington, on a five year long service leave from Camp Hood Texas, registered with the KUH employment service and worked construction for Mario Olsen Construction Co repairing bridges and culverts. He volunteered for laborer work, despite being a skilled bulldozer operator, earning praise from local observers for his wartime spirit.
Of the 62 912 army wounded as reported through April 21 1944 45 697 had returned to duty.
Official notification confirms Captain Harry Barker MCR US Marine Corps died in action July 21 in the Pacific. Messages from Lt. Gen. A. A. Vandegrift and Congressman Thomas E. Martin convey the loss and pride in Barker’s service since joining the Marines in Grinnell Iowa in May 1941.
