A customer flashed a police badge and arrested Rose Marie Sarelli at a new bookshop near the police headquarters claiming she sold obscene literature. Sarelli denied the accusation as she faced the charge in Chicago.
In Belfast, Rev Ian Paisley mobilizes a march on Stormont Castle to deliver a protest petition against the British government order disarming the all Protestant B specials blamed for recent Belfast riots. British troops guard the city as eight people died in clashes and Catholics accuse the government of discrimination.
Rescue crews comb muddy James River banks searching for victims and survivors as Virginias flood toll climbs. Governor Godwin warns potentially at least 100 dead. Massies Mill and Wood’s Mill in Nelson County hit hard with numerous fatalities.
President Nixon swam with family and Secret Service on a private Camp Pendleton beach while reporters were barred. Earlier he received a Vietnam peace talks update from Ambassador Lodge during a flight to the western White House, and the two discussed troop withdrawals.
U S forces battled up Hill 101 against North Vietnamese and trapped troops in a valley. About 500 North Vietnamese and 32 Americans were reported killed or wounded over five days as jets and artillery targeted the hill while seeking a downed helicopter and eight Americans including photographer Oliver Noonan.

The new order suspends normal hearings for swift punishment, allows three weeks police detention, and confines defendants to summary trials. Brno sees a nine hour curfew and riot police use of tear gas as soldiers deploy. Official counts report 1,377 arrests and at least five deaths with reports of more.
In Des Moines a public body and a private association agreed to cooperate with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission to combat subtle discriminatory practices in real estate. They will draft an antidiscrimination statement for 9,000 licensed agents and mail a code of ethics with license renewal forms. The effort aims to educate the public and professionals, with emphasis on ending bias in home sales and promoting fair treatment regardless of color.
Max Lewis of Wellman Washington County on Area Ten Community College board questions Lloyd S. Smith's criticism of the college accounting. Lewis says unified state accounting laws now enable accurate comparisons and defends board reimbursements as legal and comparable to other boards and officials. He notes Area Ten started from scratch unlike Fort Dodge and defends trips to St Louis and Detroit as study and convention attendance.
United Press International reports Iowa will see generally fair conditions tonight and Sunday with little temperature change. Lows range from the 50s in the east to the 60s in the west. Monday looks partly cloudy and a bit warmer with a chance of widely scattered thunder showers.
