A three year old from Davenport was rushed to Mercy Hospital in critical condition after falling three stories onto a sidewalk. Bradley De Bor, son of Joan De Bor, toppled from a window ledge while playing at home Thursday night.
UPI reports intensified combat on the northern coast and plains as U.S. forces tally over 400 enemy deaths this week and discover more than 1000 Communist troops on a single battlefield. Da Nang base faces a fatal attack. civilians also killed in a rocket strike.
Generally fair to night and Saturday with warmer conditions in the northeast. Lows range from the 50s in the northeast to the 60s elsewhere, with highs Saturday in the middle to upper 80s. Outlook: Sunday mostly fair and pleasantly warm.
UPI reports President Nixon and South Korea's Park Chung Hee pledged to keep American and Korean forces along the 38th parallel strong and alert to deter communist aggression. They endorsed long term efforts to reduce tensions, noted the homeland reserve defense force, and agreed to continue support as they spoke at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco.
An intercepted memo from the Labor Department in Washington D C satirically notes inflation deflates the pocketbook in a terse exchange attributed to WEJ. The fragment hints at economic concerns and official rhetoric without presenting fuller context or corroborating details.
State Auditor Lloyd R. Smith released a critical audit of Area X Community College in Cedar Rapids. It flags unaccounted equipment purchases exceeding $500,000, late board meetings, meals at school expense, excessive superintendent compensation, high administration costs, and travel reimbursement irregularities including unsupported claims and predated advances. Total operating cost was about $2.01 million with $2.55 million in revenue, largely from $1.50 million state aid.
Guards at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant ended a 29 day walkout and began returning to work. Union rep Ed Smith said leaders agreed to a contract extension to October 5. Details of the pact were not released until all members were notified. Picket lines were taken down and striking workers in sympathy were urged to return. The plant makes weapons used in Vietnam and officials said production was not disrupted for the most needed items.
J MAR Equipment and Engineering Co of Burlington announces plans for a new automatic car wash, laundry complex and grocery store on West Madison Street Washington. Total investment expected at completion is 250000 dollars. Site improvements to the existing car wash are slated to begin.
The third session of a county wide pre school immunization clinic will be held Tuesday August 26 from 1 to 2 p.m. in Washington in the basement of the courthouse. Diphtheria whooping cough tetanus and oral polio vaccines will be given at 50 cents per dose with possible waivers. The program is sponsored by the County Medical Society with the Iowa State Department of Health and the County Public Health Nursing Service.
Davenport residents approved acquiring the city transit system by a 92 percent margin in a special election. With all 30 precincts reporting the tally was 9,504 in favor and 872 opposed, including one precinct voting 17 to 1. The ballot also rejected longer terms for city officials.
Howard E. Clendenen, president of the Iowa Insurance Institute, reports 1968 auto losses in Iowa totaled 83.5 million dollars, double the figure a decade earlier. He notes 78,531 accidents in 1968 produced an estimated 185 million dollars in measurable economic losses, with 867 highway deaths last year and warns that unless public pressure forces harsher action on unsafe drivers, conditions will not improve. He calls for reevaluation of traffic laws, enforcement, road and vehicle design, and public attitudes toward safety.
The Labor Department reports July consumer prices up five-tenths of 1 percent led by food and services, pushing the yearly rate to 6 percent. Wages rose 68 cents to 115.44 weekly, offsetting price gains. CPI holds real purchasing power. Commerce Department notes inflation remains strong with limited signs of easing.
