Sheriff Glen Weed reports Richard L Pool 19 of Venice California held without charge. Pool allegedly fired a .22 rifle at a passing car driven by Russell Candy, wounding the cushion near the Candy children and stole a woman’s purse containing about $70. He also allegedly borrowed $2 from Robert Sutton’s home near Pulaski while Miss Margaret Sutton was away.
Mrs. Paul Jackson wife of a serviceman pleaded guilty to taking a sugar dispenser pepper shaker and napkin holder from a cafe in Charles City She was fined 50 plus costs with 40 suspended if she returns the items and pays the rest A companion Mike Pooler pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct paying a five dollar fine and costs
Brig. Gen. Charles H. Grahl, state director of Selective Service, sent personal letters to Iowa's 120 draft boards urging continued effort. He said two main tasks remain: reclassifying men under 26 and selecting draftees as replacements, and helping discharged veterans find employment and reintegrate into civilian life.
Des Moines reports deposits in 645 chartered Iowa banks totaled 1.1965 billion dollars at June 10, up 157.7 million from a year earlier. Last year period loans and nonbond investments fell 20.1 million while US securities rose 160 million to 719 million. cash and securities made up 79 percent of total resources.
Lake Park remembers relatives in Holland in five years letters. They recount Nazi occupation causing deprivation of food fuel and heat and describe executions and killings of Kamphuis family members by German forces during the occupation.
Milford report notes an interest-free 20009 loan approved for Trinity Lutheran church in Des Moines to help fund a 125000 church construction project. The Iowa West District of the Missouri Synod Lutherans endorsed the loan at its annual meeting.
Oslo reports quote Norwegian Jews denouncing Vidkun Quisling as traitor who sent about a thousand relatives to death in Poland. 49 witnesses including Dr Leo Eitinger testified as Quisling denied knowledge of gas chambers and claimed Jews were being resettled.
At the county price and rationing office it was announced that Mrs Edna Lytle will become chief clerk on Sept 1, succeeding Mrs Frances Braden who recently resigned. Lytle has served since January as clerk of the food and shoe panel. Ferne Minick resigned as clerk of the price panel. Margaret Hotle takes her place. Mary George resigned as a clerk effective August 31 to attend Iowa University.
Al Faulkner, formerly of Washington, is returning to Muscatine to become manager and area director for the United States employment service. Since 1944 he has led Jefferson Washington and Van Buren counties from Fairfield. He began in 1934 with the Washington county office and moved to Muscatine in 1941 as an interviewer.
The Des Moines church led by Rev. Strathford Eynon plans to build a new house of worship near Drake University during the West Okoboji convention. The project aligns with the church’s expansion goals and community presence.
The Associate Presbyterian synod met at Washington church with Rev. H. J. Orr of Smiths Ferry Penn elected and installed as moderator for the year. The session planned Friday and Saturday meetings and set August fast and thanksgiving observances. Dr. W. J. Masson reported treasurer’s figures and Rev. Victor Bucci of New York spoke on Signs of the Times. The retiring moderator Dr. R. K. Atchison opened the convening with a sermon from Isaiah 62 6 urging persistence in prayer until Jerusalem is praised in the earth.
Ida May Davis 75 died at her home 515 West Washington yesterday after three months of declining health. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones Funeral Home with Rev. W. R. Allen of Bethel Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Born October 5, 1869 in New Athens Ohio, she came to this area as a child and lived in Bethel Township before moving to Washington four years ago. She was a longtime Bethel church member and active in the Missionary society and Friendship club. Survived by brothers Charles Nettle Edward James and Carrie Davis all of Washington except Edward of Ainsworth. one sister Belle Davis and one brother John William Davis preceded in death.
After the gasoline rationing ended the Washington county ration office received a flood of tire applications from motorists. The tire quota remains unchanged and demand far exceeds supply. J A Davis district board supervisor urged patience and noted nonessential car use should not file for tires while the panel does its fair distribution.
San Francisco August 23. Allied air raids nearly wiped out one fifth of Japan's 260 cities. Tokyo radio reported 266000 killed and nearly 10000000 killed wounded or homeless in the wartime losses. Casualty figures were incomplete and likely to rise.
Two Des Moines men with prior prison terms are jailed on suspicion of robbery after abducting Private Lee Witten between Sigourney and Washington. They borrowed a car with Betty Mott of Sigourney and took Witten from the vehicle, later fleeing toward Iowa City before being captured. Authorities seek to confirm the robbery's county.
Kenneth Brenneman's Angus steer King Cole won grand champion at the Washington county 4-H fair. Wm Wiley and Clement Thomann earned reserve and first in divisions. Hereford and Shorthorn classes show strong entries led by Bill Foster and Clement Thomann. Dairy also features top Holstein, Guernsey, and Jersey placements among multiple exhibitors.
Mrs. Mary Jenkins, born in Gallatin Missouri on April 1 1865 and married to Thomas A Jenkins in 1886, died at 6 15 this morning. She had lived in Washington three years and belonged to the Christian Tabernacle. Surviving are four children including Mrs H F Hampton and Mrs Albert Rollins. Body to L A Jones funeral home pending plans.
The Cedar Clipper girls 4-H club received first prize for its booth and for a special feature at the county fair. Leaders include Mrs. Maurice Crawford. other blue ribbon clubs were West Point, Farm erette, Clover Leaf, Northernite. Raffled booths and features highlighted home furnishings and color harmony themes with specific entries and ribbons awarded to multiple clubs and members.
In Manila on August 23 the Tokyo radio formally asked for five revisions to MacArthur surrender orders and said 50,000 to 60,000 allied troops would land in the capital area next week. It outlined five requests to keep some vessels in operation and allow limited communications with allies.
Senior high school registration runs Monday from 9 to 12 and 1 to 5 for freshmen from rural areas and students changing schedules. Junior high registration is Tuesday from 9 to 12 and 1 to 6 in the junior high office. Book rentals are collected at registration. the first session starts 8 45 Tuesday morning in the high school auditorium.
The office of price administration announced that sugar stamp 38 in ration book four becomes valid September 1 and covers five pounds of sugar until December 41, 1945. Stamp 36 becomes invalid August 31 as the five pounds per four months ration continues due to shortages.
