Peace officers in the region search for the Sheldon police car taken early Tuesday from in front of the Arlington hotel. Night Officer Op Wagener had entered the hotel to visit his wife, a night clerk, leaving the keys in the vehicle.
Three youths from Cumberland Maryland aged 16 and 17 were jailed in Linn county under $2500 bail each on charges of interstate transportation of an automobile believed stolen in Cumberland. They were arrested Monday west of Lowden.
An Iowa coroner's jury ruled the death of three people in a Greyhound bus crash 12 miles east of Oakland, last Wednesday, was accidental with no criminal negligence by the driver Willard Roeske, 27, of Atlantic, Indiana. Roeske testified he conducted tire checks before leaving Omaha and drove cautiously due to light fog and celebrations of the Japanese surrender.
Fort Dodge report says 7 year old Frank Fiebiger suffered the loss of two fingers on his right hand and a severe eye injury after a dynamite cap exploded. Police state he found a box of caps and struck one with a hammer.
Former Iowa Senator Guy M. Gillette, president of the American League for a Free Palestine, announced he would head a delegation to London next month to urge Britain to modify its policy restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine.
At Leon Beatty post meeting the American Legion outlined extensive remodeling of downstairs rooms at City Hall. The space will host Legion meetings and other patriotic groups, with partitions removed to create a large meeting room and significant redecorating by builders. Lt. Warren Lins spoke of his 15 months as a German POW and praised the Red Cross.
The War Production Board will end its Wartime priority system and adopt a new peacetime limitation method to speed reconversion and safeguard military, business, and civilian interests. Nylon hosiery stocks are expected to reach consumers by Thanksgiving or Christmas. Also under review are potential reduced ration points for Most wheat, near-price ceilings for new autos, and removal of control over rayon and related materials.
The Soviet Union announced the capture of Kang Teh Henry Pu Yi the former last Manchu emperor and ruler of Manchukuo now held as a captive. Radio broadcasts said his safety is in Soviet hands as 52000 Japanese officers and men including four generals were captured.
Izvestia, the Soviet government organ, rejects Western proposals for allied supervision of elections in liberated states as unwarranted interference with sovereignty. The dispatch notes a split with Western allies over postwar democracy methods as Greece heads toward supervised ballots by UK and US. Britain and the United States protested Bulgaria’s election arrangements.
Mrs Emma Melvina Titterington Sr died this morning at her Hebner apartments home after two years of illness. Funeral services are set for Friday at 1 30 p m with burial in Chipplanook cemetery Rock Island. She was born June 10 1861 in Rock Island county. She married John Titterington March 9 1881 and lived near Washington Iowa since 1901. Surviving are her husband a daughter Mrs Will Lins of Washington 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Japanese radio reports picked up by United Press say Hiroshima and Nagasaki suffered massive casualties and widespread destruction. Tokyo described tens of thousands killed, many burned, with over 100000 wounded and 200000 homeless at Hiroshima and tens of thousands killed at Nagasaki.
Judging at the Washington county 4-H club fair opened today at the armory. Roger Holmes of Crawfordsville won the market litter championship with Earl Duvall of West Chester as reserve. The event drew 243 animals including 138 market pigs and 50 baby beeves, with 16 litters in the market class and judges calling the field one of the best.
The county 4-H club fair will feature an auction Thursday at 1 pm for baby beeves and market hogs. Washington county business men and packer buyers will bid on the animals the article notes.
Members of 13 girls 4-H clubs in the county arranged booths and displays for the achievement Show at the Methodist church basement. The girls’ portion opens this evening and tomorrow. Judging began this afternoon with Granda Holleywell and Norma Geigenspan serving as judges for home furnishings and records. Demonstration teams will present tomorrow starting at 9 15 oclock with Laura Heddleson judging the demonstrations.
A pastor change occurs at the Nazarene Church in Washington next Sunday. Rev. Robert Weathers, after a year in Washington, departs for Waterloo to lead a larger Nazarene work. Rev. Ralph Gray, from Bettendorf Iowa, takes over, living at 426 East Madison Street parsonage.
County Superintendent Lester B. Krabill lists the rural school staff for the coming year noting most schools start September 4 with some opening August 27. Four districts have not yet reported final selections and many township assignments are named with multiple teachers listed per school.
Despite Japan's surrender and wartime celebrations, the call to salvage waste paper remains urgent. Citizens are urged to bring in paper, placing it in the west bin near the Vacant Lot east of the post office, as the need lasts until every service member returns home.
Charles Thomas reported that Austin and Henry Sutherland delivered an outstanding batch of spring pigs to Grand Valley Packing at the Burlington railway yards yesterday. They averaged 223 pounds and were praised as especially good for so early.
General MacArthur announced Japan will surrender aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on August 31 and outlined an occupation plan. American troops will begin occupation August 26 with landings at Atsugi and Yokosuka while Japanese forces are ordered to ground aircraft and assist POW welfare. The Maine legislature set aside 25,000 dollars for a blueberry research farm of the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station.
The bureau of internal revenue issued a presidentially ordered change to salary stabilization rules. It allows limited increases in pay for executives administrators and professionals not in unions, above or below 5 000 dollars, provided price ceilings are not raised and government contracts costs are not increased. If the raise fails these limits approval is required.
