Anita Mrs. Lyle Scholl suffered severe burns to both hands when fire destroyed the Fred Scholl farm house and contents southeast of Anita. The incident occurred while Mrs. Scholl was pouring fuel oil on a kitchen fire and the stove exploded. Estimated loss reached $R,000.
In Des Moines on Monday service people filed more than 3 500 Iowa war bonds for the secretary of state office surpassing the prior record of 2 700.
Moscow reports six more panzer divisions and up to 60,000 men with 900 tanks pushed into the counter offensive below Riga to widen the Baltic corridor. Pravda broadcast notes Soviet fire on East Prussia but does not confirm frontier crossing. Elsewhere Soviet forces recaptured Tukums and advanced toward a 55 mile front from Gelgava to Staulm, while Warsaw area sees a gap breach and Bug river crossing preparations. Polish communique says fighters hold out in Warsaw forts amid heavy fighting.
William E. Klop ping, 52, a farmer near Newton, is in Skiff hospital with a fractured left arm and dislocated hip from a farm accident. He hitched a team to a dead limb to remove it when the limb dropped on him as the team started suddenly.
Mrs Lola Rubendahl Chaney aged 18 died from a skull fracture after falling from a car she rode in with her estranged husband Floyd Chaney in San Pedro California Sheriff Roy A Wilson said Chaney fled Clarion after learning of the death and was later arrested at Humboldt about 25 miles away An inquest is scheduled today The couple had been separated but he returned to Clarion Monday to see her
The regular meeting of the Washington city council was held last night with little business to transact aside from routine matters, and the session was brief.
No official word yet on Captain Harry B. Barker of the Marines reported dead in Guam. Barker’s parents in Washington await notification as Congressman Martin presses Washington for a direct cable report, noting casualty lists may be incomplete and prompt word is expected when available.
Mrs Laura Bowman Lindquist who lived on the south side of the square in earlier days died August 16 at Ortega Hill near Los Angeles California. She was the sister of John and Ed Bowman and wife of the late Will Graham. She leaves one sister Mrs Jessie Wilder of Minneapolis and husband N I Lindquist survives.
J R Russell acting managing editor of the Des Moines Register & Tribune spoke at Sunset Park to AAA and soil conservation groups after touring Crawford and Brighton townships. He warned against delaying soil-building work and urged planning for peacetime agricultural reconversion, noting overextended farming and uncertain postwar markets.
Geneva dispatch cites Journal de Geneve reporting Marshal Henri Petain and two military officials were arrested by German forces in Hotel Parc at Vichy. Petain allegedly was taken to an unknown destination in Germany. A farewell letter from Petain circulated in France. Identified officials were Ten Bridoux and Admiral Belhout.
A telegram from the war department informs that Corporal Ray I West of Adel was killed in action on August 6 in New Guinea. He was 26, the brother of Robert West of Adel, and had visited the area before enlisting. His parents are Mr and Mrs Claude West of Adel.

Mitchell medium bombers hit Calau island near Halmahera and the Philippines for the first time, with no interceptions. In the sea lane south of the Philippines, six vessels were sunk, three damaged, and eight barges destroyed.
Allied reports say Toulon naval base surrounded and pushed to eight miles from Marseille with 60 miles inland. Sir Henry Wilson says the southern France bridgehead now covers over 2,000 square miles, about 285 square miles daily. German garrison at Toulon vows to fight as French infantry advance on N and W outskirts.
A survey by the Iowa Retail Farm Equipment Association with the WPB shows Des Moines area needs total 16,888 tractors and 10,480 corn pickers by July 1 1945. The figures are to be submitted to state authorities.

Telegrams from the War Department report serious wounds to Staff Sergeant Cyril James and Private First Class Donald B Curtis in France. Cyril James, early wartime entrant with Troop D of the 113th mechanized cavalry from Camp Bowie, was wounded Aug 11 after arriving in France in June. Curtis, a two year army veteran formerly at the American Pearl Button plant, was wounded Aug 5 and remains in a hospital with a new address provided for his mother, Mrs Ethel M Curtis.
