Orioles hold off Angels as Powell homers in 3-1 win

Boog Powell hit his 17th homer in the fifth to back Pat Dobson’s three hit effort and lift Baltimore over California 3-1. The win left the Orioles one half game behind Detroit, who lost to Oakland, in the AL East race. Dobson improved to 14-12 while noting his team’s scant offensive production this season despite strong pitching. Oakland moved into first in the AL West with a 9-1 win over Detroit as Jim Hunter and Rollie Fingers steered the A’s to the top spot. Cleveland beat Minnesota 10-3 behind Johnson’s three RBIs and a homer, while Twins shortfall continued.
