Washington Municipal Band Concert Set for Wednesday

The Washington Municipal Band performs Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. in Central Park. Selections include God Bless America Iowa Band Law March Belmont Overture and The Star Spangled Banner along with other pieces such as Little Brown Jug and Rainy Days and Mondays.

Washington City Council Agrees Bills At Brief Session

Washington city councilmen held a short meeting approving bills and routine matters. Next meeting set for Tuesday September 5 due to Labor Day. Washington schools welcome new teachers with orientation and a two day workshop before Thursday classes start. Municipal pool to close August 23 at 9 pm for the 1972 season. North Fourth Avenue paving began and curb and gutter installation will follow citywide before summer ends. Feilen Meat Co of Des Moines paid a record 2.50 a pound for the grand champion 4 H market beef, 1116 pounds, owner Roger Boatman plans to use proceeds for college. animal donated to Iowa State University for football training.

Cost of living rises 0.4 percent in July

The labor department reports July CPI up 0.4 percent led by a 1.2 percent surge in grocery food costs. Meats, poultry and fish rose 2.8 percent while services gained 0.3 percent and nonfood items edged higher as gasoline, housing and used cars climbed. Real weekly earnings rose 0.4 percent from June.

Nixon renomination stage set at Miami convention

GOP delegates converged on Miami Beach as Nixon moved toward renomination with a planned roll call at the convention. Protesters and internal discord surfaced while Schwengel hailed the Export Administration Act repeal benefiting Iowa farms and Rockefeller Milliken urged minority inclusion to keep the party flexible for decades.

Federal prisoners moved from Polk County jail to Story County jail

UPI reports the U S Bureau of Prisons ordered all federal inmates held in the Polk County jail to be transferred to Nevada’s Story County facility. The move affects eight inmates presently in Des Moines with future transfers to follow. The order cites a newer facility and inspector James Anthony’s report amid complaints about Polk jail conditions.

Viet Cong blasts GOP platform over Thieu support

The Viet Cong denounced the Republican Party platform for backing South Vietnamese president Nguyen Van Thieu at all costs. A VC spokesman said Vietnamization and Nixon’s ultimatum frame the war, and that peace could come within days if Thieu is dumped, bombing ends, and U.S. forces leave. Lau urged U.S. to concede to peaceful terms and stop pressuring South Vietnam.

Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and cooler today with scattered north and east showers tonight. Highs range from the upper 70s to mid 80s, with tonight's lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Wednesday brings mostly fair skies and little temperature change with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

Washington County 4 H members win top awards at Iowa State Fair

At the 1972 Iowa State Fair Washington County 4 H members earned multiple top honors in livestock. Ed Anderson of Crawfordsville took reserve grand champion in the 4 H Commercial breeding gilt division among 175 entries. Mark Hotchkiss won champion in the Suffolk one lamb class and placed in the top group of individual ewe lambs with Lori Hotchkiss. Kirk Howsare was named Iowa Champion 4 H Beef Project member in the Angus Division. Other placings included John Schneider, Larry Tener, Mike Schneider in market beef. Sanford Rugg and Linda Barnes among market swine, and Lorna and Robyn McCoy in market lambs with blue ribbons. Horsing entries featured Lori Geret third in Western Pleasure and McCoy sisters placing in pony halter.
