Howard F. Spurgeon, founder and chairman of Spur geon Mercantile Co., died Sunday night from a heart complication. He lived in Evanston, Ill., and was 85. A memorial service was held today in Evanston. The Spurgeon chain operates 56 stores. Spurgeon began in Afton, Iowa about 57 years ago. Harold Johnson, local store manager, disclosed the death.
