Barricades and Riots Hit West Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie

West Berlin police deployed barbed wire barricades and about 450 riot officers at Checkpoint Charlie to curb anti Communist protests. The clashes followed the shooting of teen Peter Fechter and sparked calls for Allied medical troops to aid refugees behind the wall.

Crop Development Ahead of Normal

Iowa corn and soybeans progress toward maturity ahead of normal despite cool temperatures and dry spells. Virtually all corn silked with two thirds in dough and a quarter dented. soybeans 87 percent pod formed. Harvest of second alfalfa and clover cuttings nearing completion. Nicola and Harmon Marks 65 Years in Business

The Nicola and Harmon firm, founded in Riverside in 1889 by Col. Nicola Miss Ide Harmon and Miss Mant Essley, moved to Washington in 1897. Mrs. Howard McCleery, her son Nic and Sam, and the next generation helped run the store, now celebrating its 65th anniversary with a sale and special events.

Rotary Guest Describes England Germany Trip

Rev. Lloyd Latta spoke at the Rotary Club about a recent England and Germany stay. He showed photos of the church where he served on a Methodist exchange and landmarks in London and East Berlin. Latta said the trip strengthened his belief in American Christian ideals guiding world peace. Jay Brewer introduced him as program chairman. the club aimed for full attendance.

Churchill Leaves Hospital After Long Illness

Winston Churchill, 87, left Middlesex Hospital in a wheelchair 54 days after a broken thigh. About 3,000 well wishers cheered as he waved a V for victory and a cigar, then went home to Hyde Park with Lady Churchill awaiting on the steps.

New Water Main Planned for Advance-Ross Site

Washington city council discussed public services for the Advance-Ross plant site in northeast Washington. A 12 inch water main will run from the water works to the factory, with a larger main later to boost residential pressure as part of a long range plan. The council endorsed industrial zoning for the 40 acre plot and approved the upcoming year's budget at a prior hearing.

Manhunt for fugitive Lester Gott across southeast Iowa

Washington area officers joined by state peace officers in an intensive manhunt for Lester Gott 21 of Morning Sun who fled custody during questioning about a thefts from Riverside stores. Five burglary suspects including Gott were arrested Monday and implicated others as the ring's activity was tied to break-ins across southeastern Iowa.

Jackie To Be Honored At Ravello Festival

Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy extends her Ravello vacation and becomes a local heroine as residents plan a southern Italian fiesta to honor her as an honorary citizen. Mayor Lorezzo Mansi announced the celebration with Neapolitan songs and dances during her extended stay with daughter Caroline. Orientation Tonight At Washington Community High

Nearly 300 students may attend the annual orientation at Washington Community High School at 7 15 p m today according to Principal E Kelly Schlap koh. More than 200 freshmen signed registration cards this year, 90 transfer students from Brieh ton High School and other transfers are eligible to attend the event. The program aims to acquaint new students with their school home and rules of school life. Guided tours of the building will follow, led by student council members.

13 Die As Brazilian DC8 Crashed Into Guanabara Bay

A Panair do Brasil DC8 carrying 104 aboard ran off the runway at Rio de Janeiro International Airport and crashed into Guanabara Bay. Officials report 13 killed, 9 missing, 82 injured or survivors in hospitals or at home. No Americans aboard among 93 passengers and 11 crew.

Last of Summer Fun Events Tuesday Girls 6 12
