A Cedar Rapids column recounts Ig natz Kremandy's bid and return to jail after a two day drunkenness sentence. He was released Sunday and four hours later held again for intoxication as his wife described the episode.
In Waubeek a monument on a grassy roadside spot honors Jay Sigmund poet laureate of Waypsipinicon valley. A 2 ton boulder from his birth farm is marked with a bronze plaque. The monument is by an association of old neighbors and friends of the poet.
Meredith Willson musical director of the Good News program visits Mason City with Mrs Willson. The Willsons are former residents and Mrs Willson's mother Mrs Fred Wilson resides here locally.
Carl Smuck about 60 is in a semi conscious condition at a hospital after a car failed to stop. He was found lying in the weeds along the railway tracks with a blood trail showing he walked more than a block after the collision.
A runaway car driven by Robert Zahn plunged halfway into a CCC barracks wrecking punks as enrollees were away on work period. The steering gear failure caused the incident at the barracks. Ottumwa reports twenty three persons ill in Wapello and Davis counties from an undetermined sickness linked to a picnic at Ash Grove. Hospital attendants note four patients receiving tests for poisoning and typhoid as state health investigators probe the outbreak.
J Edgar Hoover reaffirmed that Ottumwa and Sioux City are problem areas in Iowa. In a letter to the Ottumwa Courier he said no retraction and stood by his claim as based on agent reports and citizen observations.
The newly organized Women’s League at Washington Junior College aims to serve the social interests and welfare of college women. President Maxine Marshall reports inspiration from a Drake University meeting and notes a state-wide league may form next year. A representative will be at enrollment day to assist new students.
Supt E A Ralston said Washington independent school district elementary schools open Tuesday at 9 00 A M with two buildings in use for all students. Lincoln building not ready until November may split pupils between Wallace and Old Lincoln with 4 5 6 and morning kindergarten at Wallace and 1 2 3 plus afternoon kindergarten at Old Lincoln.

Two cars stolen in Washington and Davenport were recovered. Dr. A W Clows Plymouth taken last night near the State theater was found abandoned east of Salem and a Davenport Plymouth was located in an alley on East Washington Street. Police across Davenport and Henry county work to identify the suspect, possibly the same thief. The Clow car had been stolen previously a year and a half earlier and later recovered in Waterloo.
A joint teachers institute for Henry Keokuk and Washington counties will draw 640 teachers to Washington on Friday September 8. The plan includes demonstrations conferences and a Dr H H Davis Ohio State University address with meetings at Washington High School and a dinner for school officials.
About 100 tenants in four south side apartment buildings were saved when firefighters found an incendiary layout and fuse in the basement. Fire officials said ignition could have destroyed the block, and called it a act of God that the plan was discovered in time.
A. F. Paulson and son Lioys of Duluth Minnesota acted as sellers in a local business transaction today.
At a city council meeting Washington votes to convey nine and a half acres from the late W D Townsley will to the Washington Armory corporation for a new Troop F armory on the west edge of town. City solicitor Henry H Bailey notes legality but no policy recommendation.
New York faces a deep milk shortage as dairy farmers push for a vote on Mayor Lia Ghaidia's proposed settlement after raw milk deliveries falter. Women circle milk trucks pleading for supplies. bids will be advertised soon. A car driven by W. L. Kinney of Richland crashed east of town injuring two occupants. Kinney had the car run off the road near the No. 11 school house injuring Hare old Bray. One man suffered a fractured knee cap and the other a broken arm. They were taken to Jefferson county hospital at Fairfield.
Dubuque youths body burned beyond recognition identified as Robert A. Colbert 18 of Dubuque from a photograph provided by witnesses who saw him board the bus near Dyersville. He was en route to visit his sister when the crash occurred Friday.
Ace Lillard joins the American Legion Labor Day program alongside races and a thrill show. The event promises larger crowds, a bigger field, and $150 in prizes, with Babe Litterd billed as a leading stunt driver. Admission remains 35 cents for adults.
Director Milo Sorden of the Joeton Municipal band announced the summer concert will be held in Central Park tomorrow evening. The Mt Pleasant band will play on exchange with the Washington band.

John Cobb roared to an unprecedented 369.2 miles an hour on the Bonneville speedway Utah but failed to set a world record due to a false start on the return run. Officials require an average of two trips, one each way, for an official mark.
The body of a man about 65 was found on the Rock Island tracks near Marengo Iowa today. One leg had been cut by a train. A security card in his pocket bore the name F C Priedbure and listed him as an employee of Johnson and Helfer of Creston.
Gov. George A. Wilson said he will attend the American Legion convention in Sioux City and the Iowa Daily Press Association tall corn contest at Marshalltown on Wednesday.
