A Hamburg man Virei Lair lost control on a wet curve causing a collision that injured three people including Charles C. Carr and Mrs Sophia Gernedt from Omaha Nebraska.
Milton Burlingame a 29 year old farmer living south of Algona suffered serious cuts and rubber burns after his clothes were torn off by rotating tractor wheels. He crawled free and drove a mile back to his house.
Davenport man August F. Whipka, 49, was crushed when his tractor tipped while pulling a large flat trailer. The vehicle overturned on a downhill street, fatally injuring the city employee.
Mrs. Harrison W. Yount of Tarkio drove home with her 18 month old daughter on the seat beside her. She looked away to the child causing loss of control and the car overturned into a ditch landing on its wheels. The mother suffered minor cuts while the child was unharmed. They were visiting Mr. and Mrs. Loren Head at Dunlap.
Norma Hetland of Mason City was badly injured near Emmetsburg when her car, driven by Marvin Laven of Mason City, collided with three other vehicles. The other drivers were Phil Emberton of Saint Olaf, Glenn Carty of Creston, and Louis Tabo of Winnebago, NBC. Five passengers received minor cuts and bruises.
A Maquoketa picnic ended in tragedy when Paul Hinrich of Delmar 40 drowned in the Maquoketa River during a family gathering with the Miller and Harrington clans. He disappeared after shouting dinner r crawl and likely suffered a heart attack or cramps while swimming.
Sheriff Carl Anderson said identification of the boy burned to death in the Black and White bus disaster west of Dyersville was unlikely due to the body's condition. Two people died and five were injured in the incident, with hope of dental clues fading.
Des Moines reports forty two Iowa artists entered the annual state fair art salon. Fifteen come from Des Moines and twenty five from other regions. Most entries are landscapes still life water color and pastels. Four contestants entered sculpture. Dan Rhodes Fort Dodge WPA artist again competes in oil paintings and the commercial and advertising art contests.
Carl Lindborg of Waukee reported to police that he was forced into a large sedan by three men who pointed a gun and robbed him of his watch and chain before Lindborg, exhausted, walked to Officer Henry Van Grud to report the incident.
Mayor LaGuardia seeks an immediate settlement as the week-old milk strike cripples New York City supply. Archie Wright of the Dairy Farmers union agrees to direct consumer milk deliveries during the stoppage while talks continue with officials and distributors.
Max See’s car was wrecked in a crash nine miles from Strong City Kansas while returning from Enid Oklahoma. A strong Kansan wind and a semitruck caused a vacuum, pushing the car off an eight foot embankment into a field. See walked away unharmed and returned to work at Benteco market.
Dr William Webster Hall Jr of New York City called on Mrs Agness Ross and Tillie Parker in West Chester as he travels to Caldwell Idaho where he has been elected president of the College of Idaho. He is a Yale PhD and author of Puritans in the Balkans. His wife Mayme Conger and Hattie Noss accompany him or await in Germany before joining in Caldwell.
The National Youth Administration announces aid distribution methods for Washington junior college for the fall. Eligible students may work off half their tuition. about 200 applications are on file. Kenneth Kimberlin, field agent, reports strong enrollment prospects and assists in locating eligible out of town students. Registration is set for August 31 and September 1 with early arrangements urged for those unable to attend those days.
A Greyhound bus en route from New York to Washington collided with a fire engine in fog near Iowa, injuring 29 people. Norma Bush, 24, of Sioux City suffered facial cuts among the victims.
A head on crash between two family cars on a weekend trip near Marengo injures 12 and claims the life of Frances Jean Remella a T year old girl from Cayming Remella. Ambulances rush to the scene as doctors from Williamsburg and Ladora assist local physicians in treating the injured. the collision described as one of the worst here.
A Journal photographer captured a towering corn stalk eight miles northwest of town on Don Kadda’s farm measuring feet 10 inches. The champion stalk drew hundreds to the Journal office showing off its remarkable growth and prompting talk of a state championship.
The Health Unit highlights the value of maternity nursing services during delivery and prenatal supervision. Through mid 1959, nursing support assisted 68 deliveries, matching total such births in 1958, with rising demand suggesting policy shifts to require prior nursing supervision before home delivery services. A Dover Point fishing party of five men and a boy set out at 9 30 yesterday morning to fish near a salvage scene four miles offshore. A heavy gale swamped their craft, washing six bodies ashore on a rocky strand near the Squalus salvage site as the Coast Guard continued searches.
Des Moines Aug 21 The state executive council announced it would advertise for bids to be opened Sept 1 for 50 000 tons of coal for the state house and other capitol buildings on the grounds.

London prepares emergency cabinet session to consider parliamentary recall and defense pledges to Poland, with Britain mobilizing 400000 territorial troops and ready expeditionary forces.
Rev. M. C. Carstensen preached at the indoor union service in Washington after the outdoor park gathering was canceled by rain for the second Sunday in July. The sermon urged living a complete life through Christ and obedience to God, with next week planned back in Central park unless weather restricts.
Two funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM at Sherman’s funeral home for John F Stewart and Flora J Stewart who died within 26 hours of each other. Burial is at Elm Grove cemetery. Dr FW Eastwood of the Presbyterian church and Dr ht F Galloway of Bristow Oklahoma will conduct the rites. Miss Flora Stewart born October 8 1852 in Cedar Creek Ohio and John Stewart born January 23 1865 in the same place were long time Washington residents. They were siblings of George M Stewart and had lived with him at 516 North Marion avenues, dying within eight months of each other. Surviving relatives include Allen Stewart Ralph Hart Fred Hart Mrs Alice Reynolds Mrs Ed Statler Mrs Russell Bell and Miss Jessie Stewart.
