New Students to Register at Washington High School
Principal George Fields announced registration for all new students at Washington High School next Monday and Tuesday, August 28 and 24. First time students from country schools or other high schools must register. continuing students who finished junior high last June need not. Enrollment is expected to rise, with the 1999 freshman class likely larger than 1938.

Secretarial Course Offered at Washington Junior College
Washington Junior College will offer a secretarial science course taught by Mr. Ralph LeMoine. Open to students with some typing or beginners in commerce, it runs eight to nine daily, combining typing and shorthand. Last year adult and regular students attended, and many are expected to enroll again this year. Dean Mead aims to fit the schedule so secretarial students can stay for practice during the nine to ten period. The course is described as an exceed.

Names on Rural Mail Boxes Aim to Aid Patrons and Carriers

Double Stewart Funeral Services
Funeral services were held yesterday at Sherman's funeral home for John F. Stewart and Flora Stewart siblings who died within 25 hours of each other. Dr F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church officiated with Rev Frank Galloway a nephew assisting, burial at Elm Grove cemetery. Boy Injures Hand In Corn Cutter Accident
Five year old Charlies Wallerich of Richland, son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Wallerich, lost four fingers on his right hand when he touched an old style corn slicer at home. A Washington County hospital doctor tied tendons and set bones, casting the hand. The hospital says the fingers may be saved and the boy will stay a few days. Charlies is grandson of Mr and Mrs H R Baker of Washington.

New Auto Speed Is Set Today
John Cobb drove his 2600 horsepower car to a world speed record of 368.85 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats Utah on an 16 mile south to north run. An official record required a return northbound run to average the two-way speed and eclipse the 367.5 mph mark set by Captain Eyston.

Radda Wins State Tall Corn Contest Awarded by Governor
In Marshalltown Iowa on August 23 Don Radda of Washington Iowa won the state Tall Corn contest with a 3S foot 10 inch stalk described as the tallest in history. Doris Ridenour of West Liberty and Dr D Hill of Batavia placed second and third earning 25 and 10 dollars respectively from the Iowa Daily Press Association. Governor George A Wilson presented prizes and praised farm rivalry and corn innovation amid plans for expanding corn markets and new uses for gasoline blends.

Youth Admits Auto Thefts Back to Eldora
A 15 year old youth from Salem Iowa admitted to stealing two cars in Davenport and Washington and later another three cars, with weapons traded for fuel. He was on parole from Eldora's industrial school and will be returned there. Deputies recovered the vehicles and the owner retrieved his car in Davenport.
