Des Moines August 22 application for 22 Iowa projects costing 611000 to employ 1114 men was sent to Washington. These are the first Iowa projects under the four billion dollar federal works program aimed at reducing unemployment, including book repair, creek straightening and graveling county roads.
Des Moines resident A A Schneiderhahn admitted following Miss Helen L Thomas into traffic court after she was charged with speeding. He claimed innocence, saying he was a "smart guy" but paid a $5 fine plus costs after the judge dismissed the charge against Miss Thomas amid the receipt showing $8.85.
The Iowa Socialist party holds a convention in Des Moines with George A. Nelson of the Wisconsin Farm Holiday association as the principal speaker. Nelson, a 1934 Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate, sits on the national board of directors of the farmers union. Mrs. L. M. Conrad of Grinnell will also speak.
Cherokee County coroner Dr. C R Quinn ruled the shooting accidental. Lad Ad ler thirteen was killed when he and his brother Vivian shot at birds on the Thomas Lingle farm west of Cherokee while their parents worked on the farm.
A two minute pause at the Iowa state fair will honor Will Rogers. The fair board ordered silence during the funeral period as midway attractions, ticket paths, and all activities halt for the tribute.
The city gears up for the annual hobo convention drawing about 100 tramps. Streets line with decorations as the event, a long standing local claim to fame, returns with the election of the king of hoboes. Ray Murray, secretary of agriculture, is slated to attend.
The detective bureau warns of a well dressed man renting rooms for a week and leaving $1 deposits. Several Des Moines housewives report losses of money clothing and jewelry after the suspect, described as a tire salesman from Denver, left their homes.
A swath of grasshoppers nearly blotted out the sun at a reunion as they moved northeast. They were followed by white winged hawks, small and brown and flying about 100 feet above the ground, creating an unscheduled attraction for visitors.
Four youths from Howard County families pleaded guilty to stealing eight cattle near Preston, Minnesota. William Hughes Jr Eugene Cruse and Chester Hughes all 20 received one to three years in the Minnesota reformatory while Victor Prescott 26 drew a similar term in the Iowa reformatory. Ben Shanklin of Preston was arrested and pleads not guilty.
Theophilus Wrenizer 89 civil war veteran died after a long medical practice in Decatur County. He avoided using a car and reportedly gave last instructions to his caretaker before death.
Jennie Clendenning, 87, died at 7 50 AM at her daughter Mary Beggs home 120 East Seventh street Washington. Funeral at Sherman’s funeral home Sunday 2 30 PM conducted by Dr F C Witzig man of the Methodist church with burial Elm Grove cemetery. She came to Washington county in 1853 with her family crossing the Mississippi on the ice. She married James Clendenning Oct 25 1883 and lived on a farm northwest of Washington before moving to the city in 1904. She leaves a daughter Mary Beggs and son David, a sister and a brother, three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong United Presbyterian member.
A kittenball tournament is planned as part of the Dutch Creek fair with first and second prizes of four and two dollars. The event will be run by a committee including Robert G. Sheetz Warren Carris George Augustine and H H Hotle. Additional committees were named for refreshments stands popcorn lighting balloon stand and other fair duties.
Dean Harland Mead urges junior college students to find work to cover lodging and meals. He asks for jobs that can pay for board separately or work-for-room arrangements from local homes and businesses. Registration at the junior college continues.
Mr and Mrs Ward Chandler purchase the Burton Cafe on South Marion avenue with immediate possession. Chandler previously worked at the A and P Store for five years and will run a home cooked cafe with his mother in charge of cooking. The Burtons, who opened the Burton Inn, intend to stay locally but may relocate in the near future.
Dean Mead announced college events on Thursday and Friday August 29 and 30. He expects at least 80 enrollments and hopes to match last year's total.
Crowds line up at Forest Lawn as Will Rogers is honored in a public viewing before the funeral. About 25,000 people queued for a glimpse of the bronze coffin before services at four o clock, which followed a closed casket per the widow’s request.
Sunday worship at the Methodist church will be a regular service with Dr. Witzigman preaching on "Who Is Counted Worthy" as the scheduled communion is postponed due to other churches not holding regular services. A helpful and interesting service is planned for all friends.
Miss Edith Carris will graduate tonight and receive her bachelor of arts degree from the State University of Iowa with English as her major. She plans to teach at Winfield this year, having completed part of her work in residence and the rest through Saturday classes and correspondence study. She taught at West Chester the past two or three years.
Aura MecNamer of Iowa City and Della Jensen of Cedar Rapids were married by Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee Tuesday at his office. The witnesses were Mr and Mrs Glenn Mabies of Iowa City.

Washington county justices of the peace hear more traffic cases as the new state highway patrol cracks down on violations. Patrolmen Gildroy Pape and Taylor report drivers ignoring stop signs and risky road behavior near Ainsworth and Mt. Pleasant. License examiner visits weekly to test applicants.
Funeral services for Miss Mary Alda Tate former Washington resident will be held Friday afternoon at Elm Grove cemetery. Rev Fred Buck of Pennsylvania leads with the body arriving from West Allis Wisconsin. The funeral party includes her brother Rev J Howard Tate of New York City and sister Mrs J L Atchison of West Allis. Friends may meet at Shermans funeral home at 2 30 PM.
Yesterday afternoon two cars collided at the junior high school corner. One vehicle tipped onto its side but damage was minor and occupants suffered only scratches and bruises. Six girls rode in one car while a Brighton man drove the other.
War veteran Jay Wilcox of Rocky Ford Colorado and formerly of Company K Washingtons Infantry, who served in France and later in the army of occupation in Germany, is reported to be suffering from arthritis at his father R C Wilcox’s home on East Madison Street.
The civil service commission announces open competitive examinations for stenographers and typists for men in the eighth district including Iowa. Tests will be held in Iowa City Davenport Burlington and Ottumwa. Applications due August 30. For details contact Fred S. Downing secretary of the local civil service board.
Mrs George M Fulton died following illness and a stroke. She lived in Washington Iowa after moving from Young America and Franklin townships. Survived by three children Archie Euwer Clarepee and Harold, plus a sister and brother, funeral arrangements pending at Sherman Funeral Home.
Numerous 4-H youths from the county took livestock, home efficiency articles, and health projects to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. W. J. Roudabush and race of companions accompanied trailers, with many boys and girls scheduled to exhibit calves pigs and sheep and participate in judging contests and demonstrations through the weekend.
Donald Kyle, who graduated in pharmacy at the State University of Iowa this June, left Wednesday for Waterloo where he has accepted a position with a drug store. He is a son of Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Kyle and a former Washington junior college student.
SIOUX CITY August 22 UP Leo J Wegman Iowa state treasurer indicted for perjury by Woodbury county grand jury in a partial report on statewide graft and political corruption. He is the second state official indicted after Attorney General Ed L O Connell. The indictment followed his grand jury appearance as the probe neared final phases begun last April.
Des Moines Aug 22 the investigation of the investigation was halted at a special Iowa executive council session. The panel had ordered a probe into the Woodbury county grand jury and statewide vice and corruption background and methods, but ended the special inquiry pending the grand jury’s final report.
Miss Althea Montgomery of Washington junior college faculty leaves for Des Moines to oversee an educational exhibit at the state fair. The exhibit focuses on normal training work, arranged at the request of Iowa state superintendent Miss Agness Samuelson. Mrs. W J Masson and family accompanied Miss Montgomery to Des Moines and will join her through the fair.
