Wapello plans a new bank with capital stock of 25 000 dollars and 5 000 dollars surplus. All stock is pledged and shares at 120 dollars each. A building will be secured and the bank opened once collections and charter are completed.
The motion picture industry will shut down tomorrow afternoon to honor Will Rogers. Four memorial services will be held as his family attends his Glendale funeral. Governor Merriam urged Californians to observe one moment of silence during the funeral. Wiley Post returned to Oklahoma after his death, with services planned in Maysville and Oklahoma City.
Corning reports former Gov. Dan W. Turner and Mrs. Turner will depart about Sept. 1 for a two to three month vacation. They sail Sept. 7 from New York aboard the Georgia bound for England and will visit England Scotland Ireland and France.
One hundred years of northwest Iowa history will be portrayed in a parade and pageant here as Webster county joins in celebrating the century since white settlers arrived. The event marks the region's founding and community heritage with readings, floats, and local participation.
Oelwein photographer Oelwein Dwight Schneider learned three of his five portraits will hang in the portrait division of the California Pacific International exposition. The works are part of a collection featuring prominent visitors to Oelwein. Of 3000 prints entered, 681 were accepted.
Grinnell canning factory will begin the season Friday noon under superintendent Clark Hagen. Country Glentleman corn will be canned exclusively and 1200 local workers will be hired. Over 1200 acres have been contracted, Hagen said.
Muscatine will use 1650 workers in four canneries this season with three plants at capacity next week. The Heinz plant is already running at full force, employing about 1200 people at peak season.

The village incorporates University Heights area south of the avenue.
W S Reister Sons entertained Chick club members and parents at a 6 30 PM party at the plant last evening. Groups toured departments, the Washington Concert band played, Rev Carl W Klein presided, solos by Miss Margaret Corbin and F D Walker, speaker M B Petratz of Sumner Iowa on poultry. Prizes awarded to multiple attendees. 1159 ice cream cones and 25 gallons consumed.
Miss Carolyn McCleery has returned home from Cincinnati, resuming daily life with family and friends. She's greeted by relatives and will rest after travel before resuming normal activities.
M L Bowman, chairman of the Iowa farm debt advisory council, warns farmers facing foreclosure to watch for a joker in the moratorium laws. Foreclosures started after March 1, 1985 may have altered redemption periods, while those begun earlier could extend to March 1, 1937. Farmers should seek legal aid or consult local advisory committees before a decree and judgment.

Wauken Dorothy Mitch ell, eight month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyle Mitchell of near Rossville, was smothered in her bed. The child crawled under a rubber sheet and was suffocated.

Washington Junior high announces registration for grades six to eight on August 29 and 30 from 9 AM to 4 PM. Principal Miss Ethel McCreedy asks students to pick up locker keys during enrollment. About 260 pupils expected. Assistant Principal Guy Carlton will assist in opening preparations.
The railroad pension tax bill faced a jam in the House Ways and Means Committee leaving its status unclear. It would tax wages of railway workers at two percent and payrolls of carriers at four percent to fund the retirement system. Senate action awaited for Roosevelt's signature on TVA amendment measures. Conferees on the utilities holding company bill remained deadlocked over the death sentence clause.
A delegation of Detroit and Chicago housewives announced a meat strike after marching on packing houses seeking a 20 percent price cut. Packers replied the reductions are physically impossible, while the women claimed to represent 112 organizations and vowed action to force results.

Donald Watters Jr died at 12 30 am at the Watters home 723 South Fourth avenue after pneumonia illness. He was born March 17 1929 in Aberdeen South Dakota son of D W Watters and Clara Peterson Watters. He leaves his parents and brother Duane Charles. Funeral set for 10 30 am at Sherman s funeral home with Dr F C Witzigman. burial in Ocheyedan Iowa Friday.
Davenport August 21 a plan for twenty six steps of locks and dams on the upper Mississippi from St Louis to St Paul is outlined. Costing 148000000 with 1750000 annual maintenance, the project aims to prevent floods and droughts by automated gates and lock wings. Engineers say the river will become a controlled, gentle flow once completed.
