Neighbors and City Police confronted an intruding skunk at 914 East Madison. Officer Dean Cox fired, ending the threat without incident after a car was moved and residents helped coax the animal out. Bill Kendrick first spotted the skunk on his property.
A 946 pound Angus steer named Smokey, shown by 14 year old Miss Wiseman of Iowa, sold for 1419 dollars at the Iowa State Fair beef auction, the top bid per pound at 1.50. The sale reflects a lower price than last year due to a new rule requiring slaughter after the event and lighter bidding turnout.
A stop light at the southwest corner of Washington Street and South Second was torn down this morning after a truck bed slipped from a flatbed on Highway 92 and struck the light. Damage was estimated at 300 dollars. The truck was owned by International Harvester Co and driven by Claire D. Neff.
Daniel Dean Funston one month old son of Mr and Mrs Leland Funston died Sunday at 6 20 am at their home Funeral services were held at 2 pm in the Powell Funeral Home Keota with the Rev Donald Manwarren in charge Burial was in Keota Cemetery He was born July 17 1962 in Washington County Hospital Survivors include his parents a brother Clarence and sisters Christina Marie and Deborah Sue plus the Goodwins Rey Funston and Clarence Goodwin of West Chester and Keota route one.

The Washington Municipal Swimming Pool hosts a Saturday night water show at 8 p.m. Harold Stevens, the pool manager, says the event features local swimming and diving talent and serves as the season finale before the pool closes on Sunday, August 26, 1962. A rehearsal is set for 5 30 p.m. Thursday.
Mt Pleasant Iowa firm awarded a 16985 dollar contract to build a military equipment parking area at the Washington Iowa United States Army Reserve Center. The H Eugene Smith Construction Company was the sole bidder among eight firms.
In Berlin a crowd of about 500 West Berliners pelted a Soviet bus carrying 16 Red Army soldiers near Checkpoint Charlie. The attack follows the shooting of a Western refugee and coincides with East German claims of a downed Western plane and heightened border tensions. Washington Future Farmers of America earned blue ribbons with swine entries at the Iowa State Fair as judging completed Saturday in the FFA market classes. Dick Wells and Jim Wells each earned two blue ribbons on their individual market pigs. Forty nine boys exhibited pens of three and ninety two showed individual market hogs.
Mark Mosier of Washington tops the Jalopy feature at Columbus Junction after winning the first heat and the 20 lap race. Bill Pollmeier and Bruce Reilly chase Mosier with Chuck Smith and Charley Moffitt trading positions behind. John Mullink posts fastest time trial but a protest prompts teardown. next show is in West Liberty then Mt. Pleasant.
YMCA invites all to view films and slides from a border camping trip. Ten local high school boys joined Tom McFadden of the Y staff on the excursion last summer, with pictures to be projected at 8 30 this evening.
The Savannah, the world’s first atomic powered cargo ship, begins its maiden voyage from Yorktown Virginia with the UPI report noting its lack of a smokestack and the atomic emblem on its hull. It is due to dock in Savannah Georgia on Wednesday as a demonstration of the government’s $53 million investment.
County supervisors said the south portion of River side Washington road has finished construction and two weeks remain before opening to traffic. Crews will finish shoulders and marking while the north half is already graded and open to traffic.
