Cecil B. De Mille and three other top film industry figures will visit Des Moines next week for a managers and employees conference of Tri-States Theaters Corp. More than 100 theater managers and employers from Iowa Nebraska and Illinois will attend.
Col. A G Gillespie granted permission to use a portion of the Rock Island arsenal for polo practice. He approved the field and offered strong support, noting the 14th Cavalry camp use this summer may align with the poloists who practice three times weekly at the fairgrounds.
Des Moines ranked 10 percent below similar cities in property crimes for April through June and 6 percent below in violent crimes, according to a FBI report from Washington DC. The city’s figures were cited in the major crime statistics release.
RE J. Mccormick of Davenport reports paying 1138 for a night out in Rock Island. He says a man and woman invited him to dance, then on a crowded floor his billfold disappeared from his pocket. Police are investigating the incident.
Des Moines report notes that about one in six test takers fail the license exam while a majority demonstrate solid knowledge of state motor vehicle laws. Horace Tate, assistant superintendent of the motor vehicle department, states several licenses issued permit operation of model T Fords without gear shifts and two licenses allow disabled drivers to use cars with electric gear shifts.
The Woodbury county grand jury urged Governor Herring and the executive council to withdraw immediately the council's investigators from the graft inquiry. The appeal followed two hours of testimony by State Auditor CC W. Storms as the governor ignored the grand jury's subpoena and no action challenged the governor's immunity.
Dr Robert Ward of Oelwein has earned the M D degree from Iowa University in June and will serve as an interne in a major New York City hospital. He is the latest in a long line of physicians. his father Dr D W Ward has practiced in Oelwein for about 26 years.
Billy Dick Durst, age 2, of Danbury, lists his six great grandparents all from Danbury except E. B. Spencer who lives in Sioux Falls, 8. D. This family tribute notes the names Mrs. Orient Durst, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Otto, Mr. and Mrs. William Hartleben.
John W. Crooks, 39, a disabled veteran at the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown, obtained a marriage license to wed Lucy D. Smead, 61, also of Marshalltown. A clerk noted the age gap. Crooks said he wants a home of their own away from the home.
Alvin Karpis,Public Enemy No 1, sent a threat to J Edgar Hoover of the FBI. The message reached Hoover about a month ago and prompted a fresh tracing effort. Officials declined to detail the communication or its delivery, noting it may have come from Ottumwa Iowa.
Miss Esther McCreedy will air a fifteen minute recital on WSUI at 7 30 Wednesday evening August 21 with Miss Jane Stewart as accompanist. McCreedy teaches music in Plymouth Iowa during the school year and is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Harlan McCreedy for the summer.
Des Moines, Aug 20. Iowa Young Republican leaders will meet Aug 28 to organize a county level network and plan a statewide campaign next year. Daniel C. Nolan of Iowa City, state chairman, says delegates will be chosen to attend the national Young Republicans convention this fall and there is strong push to hold the national meeting in Des Moines. National headquarters have recently been established here.
Dean Harland Mead reports from Washington junior college that a U S aid program will again fund tuition for eligible students under the same 12 percent enrollment quota as of October 1934. About nine students may be aided, with work duties assigned in library, office, stenography, and janitorial tasks, paid at 30 cents an hour to cover tuition.
Miss Helen Coffey is visiting Wellman this week, staying with local residents and engaging in community events and social calls.
A giant U S bomber, the largest land plane in the United States, began its first long distance flight from Seattle to Dayton, with chief test pilot Leslie Power at the controls. He considered a nonstop route via Boise and Cheyenne before continuing east over Omaha to Dayton for Army Air Corps testing.
The Washington county board of supervisors accepted a 666 foot well drilled at the county farm. A test yielded 65 gallons per minute as contractually required from Ellis F. Jones of Burlington. They plan to buy a pump and expect the well in operation in two to three weeks for county home use.
A meeting between the county board of supervisors and Emergency Relief Chairman Carl W. Klein decided not to request federal emergency relief funds for September. They cited current employment conditions and the need to avoid a state office bid that would be required for next month’s funding.
Three hundred Wellman children were given a free matinee Saturday. Manager Frank Green and Hutchinson Ice Cream sponsored short subjects, with popcorn provided by Mrs. Lola Coffey, new Wellman Advance manager, and Mrs. Harris MecGugin.
I Rothschild addresses the Sigourney Lions Club meeting today. Miss Helen Sartor spent the weekend in Muscatine visiting Miss Margaret England.
Hollywood, California August 20 Will Rogers and Wiley Post who flew the world together and died together in Alaska parted company for the last time. Post's body was moved from Forest Lawn cemetery to a Pan American airliner bound for Oklahoma City. Services for Rogers will be private. Post to lie in state at the Oklahoma Capitol while a public funeral is planned in Hollywood.
Group displays of farm products will be arranged by exhibitors at the Dutch Creek fair. Free display space is provided by management. Prizes of 4 2 and 1 dollars awarded for best displays. Dealers and storekeepers invited to display with unlimited free space.
Mr and Mrs John Dodd and Faye Reeves have come back from a vacation trip to Minnesota and Canada with memories of travel notes and scenery.
Funeral services for Arthur Lee Hough prominent West Chester farmer who died yesterday will be held Wednesday at 2 PM in the West Chester Methodist church. The burial service will follow at West Chester cemetery with the Knights of Pythias conducting rites. Surviving are wife Myrtle Mayne and six children Mildred Viola Earl Austin Beatrice Mae Edward J Clarence Daniel Ray Gilbert all at home except Edward in Des Moines. The family home is southeast of West Chester. Mrs Hough died in 1920. He is survived by his mother Mrs John A Hough, brother Ira Hough and sister Mrs Ira Cady twins with Ira.
The log cabin at Sunset Park will be open this week on Thursday afternoon instead of Wednesday. Mrs. E. D. Morrison Sr and Mrs. E. D. Morrison Jr will be in charge.
A. E. Atchison, a Washington shoe merchant since 1910, celebrates a quarter century in the business by moving his shop to a new location near Widmer & Busby. He arrived in Washington in 1909 and spent a period in banking before returning to footwear, partnering with Don Paul who has remained with him through the years.
A near two inch rain overwhelmed Washington sewers from midnight to daybreak. Officials recorded 1.90 inches. Stores flooded to varying depths make it one of the season’s hardest rains, unusual for August.
Washington Aug 20 Conferees agreed on a 250 million tax bill with higher income taxes starting at 50 000 net income and rejected Roosevelt inheritance tax proposals The Borah amendment barring further federal tax exempt securities was also turned down after a two hour conference this morning.
A missing plane bound from Helena Montana to Indianapolis was found wrecked near Glendo Peak Wyoming after foggy conditions. Capt George Smith reports the craft apparently struck the peak and will require hours for ranchers to reach by horse and by 1001. Passengers Burnside Smith owner Vick Arnett 28 and Eleanor Arnett 23 were aboard. Rain halted streets and basements with flooding across the town.
Paris reports the United States may seek semi official use of the Kellogg peace pact to avert the Italian Ethiopian conflict as the League of Nations may convene before September 4. Mussolini strengthens air force and mobilizes personnel, raising Italian forces by 16,288 for a total of 40,483.
Miss Clio M. Chilcott of London donated several books to the Washington public library in memory of Miss Edith Chilcote. Gifts include The Battle of Sedgemoor, Not Only With Our Lips, The Riviera of the Corniche Road, and others tied to the Chilcote family. The library building was provided by Jane A. Chilcote in her will and moved to its current site in October 1901.
Mr and Mrs Dale Duncens drove to Garwin Sunday to see Mr and Mrs W S Duncan who had visited two weeks at the home of their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Harold Rider. Mr Duncan s condition is about the same.
