In Frankfurt Germany post office workers dumped a smoking package in a vacant lot after fearing a bomb. Firemen and bomb experts sealed the area and later found the device harmless a toy car with a short circuited battery powered motor caused the smoke.
President Chiang Kai-shek announced the resignation of Gen Sun Li-jen and said an investigation of his ties to a Chinese Communist spy ring is ordered. Sun admitted negligence over activities of Maj Kuo Ting-liang and requested a full probe. Sun was not arrested.
Washington officials say Beijing is unsettled by eleven U S airmen claims of torture in Chinese jails. Peiping Radio accuses the United States of mistreating Chinese students in the United States, while State Department officials insist all students free to leave. Ambassador Johnson continues negotiations at Geneva to secure freedom for 41 American civilians.
John L. Lewis secures a $2 per day wage increase for soft coal miners in a secret deal with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association. The pact raises the basic UMW wage to $20.25 daily with $1.20 added on Sept 1 and 80 cents on April 1 1956, plus additional contract improvements.
Mrs. Ray Page of Oskaloosa died at 6 a.m. Friday after a two year illness. Services are set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Powers funeral home in Oskaloosa. The body will go to Littleton Colorado for burial where she lived before her husband’s death. Surviving: one son one grandson and two sisters.
Charles Simmons 21 of Bellefontaine Ohio and Jim Patterson 23 of Lakeview Ohio were jailed on robbery with aggravation charges after a Friday morning holdup at a filling station. Detained at Fairfield roadblock about 75 minutes later, bond set at 1000 dollars each. Simmons wife Betty 20 held on accessory charge. Phyllis McGee 15 turned to juvenile authorities. Illinois hold order extends to four youths linked to a stolen car.
Detroit patrolman George Krueger was killed when a drunken Indiana construction worker armed with a shotgun wounded him and was later killed by police tear gas. Officers surrounded the west side flat as Ellis Bailey barricaded himself, fired at police, and died after being shot during the standoff.
A forest fire along the Au Sable River near Rayling Michigan burned four square miles of jack pine threatening over a million dollars in cottages and private property. About 5 000 guardsmen officers and volunteers brought the blaze under control after hours of rapid spread.
The Ballou machine shed at the north edge of Washington burned Friday afternoon destroying a tractor several gallons of paint and tools. Fire Chief Bill Brown said about five minutes were lost in reporting the fire indirect to the station but the shed likely could not have been saved even with a direct call. The cause is undetermined and insurance partially covered the loss.
The nation’s central region endured a third heat wave as temperatures rose toward near 100 degrees from the Great Lakes to the South Atlantic and Southwest. Northern Plains stayed cooler by up to 15 degrees, while Seattle remained among the cool spots at 59.
The 12 day UN conference closed as the Soviet Union announced a wide nuclear aid plan for Communist China and satellites. It will provide fuels reactors and tech for peaceful research while China and satellites receive uranium thorium and other materials.
The five state northeast flood left a rising death toll and many missing as communities from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts faced widespread devastation. At least 94 dead and 13 missing in Connecticut, with 23 more missing, amid disrupted communications and widespread homelessness.
American military police used tear gas to break up a mass assault by about 500 Korean demonstrators at the Kunsan Air Force base. The event followed President Rhee’s warning against harming American personnel as riots tied to Czech and Polish truce inspectors spread to Kangnung.

Sen. Estes Kefauver accused the administration of shaping the prisoner of war code by political criticism of the Korean War. He said the code suits “club conditions” but not starving, interrogated soldiers and urged Defense Secretary Wilson to study it anew and consider rural draftees labeled turncoats.
To introduce them to the youth center, organizers plan to open each Saturday evening to all high school students in the area.

In Wick Scotland Captain George Watson remained on the damaged freighter Argobeam’s bridge as two salvage tugs moved to tow it to safety amid a gale. Chief Officer Kenneth Seamen and 32 crew members left the ship after an engine room fire was controlled by flooding the vessel. The Argobeam listed 30 degrees as Weather Recorder reported the dangerous seas.
Daniel C. Schmidt filed for divorce in Tehama County claiming extreme cruelty and seeking permanent custody of his 22-year-old son. Una Schmidt, now remarried, said she will contest the action and resist giving up her son while her attorney declines further comment until served.
White House says Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis L. Strauss will fly to Denver Monday to brief President Eisenhower on the GenevaAtoms-For-Peace conference. After a five hour private meeting en route, Strauss will return with the President Tuesday.
Waterloo reports Uri Richard Elliott, 57, of LaPorte City, freed on 4000 bond after alleging breaking and entering and criminal libel tied to a theft at Waterloo Dredging Co. Police say Elliott left a note to implicate a former inmate in the crime.
Sheriff units from outside Scott County raided Johnny Hartman’s Restaurant and The Gourmet’s in Davenport under orders from Atty. Gen. Dayton Countryman. Fifty-two bottles were seized at Hartman’s and seven at The Gourmet’s, with six local officers called out. Bartenders Joseph Palmisano and Glenn Barr face charges of aiding in illegal liquor delivery. Countryman said he gave oral instructions, while Assistant Atty. Gen. Emery claimed he did not direct the raids.
Rev. Robert T. Dodder son of Mrs. Jim Larson of Washington will be guest preacher at the 10 a.m. Methodist service Sunday. He was raised in Washington and has not yet led a local church pulpit. A recent Biblical institute graduate he now pastors the Methodist church in Wilton Junction.
