Edward Alexander, 20, told the Detroit courtroom he missed his trial because his brother wore the only pair of shoes. The judge ordered him to obtain another pair of shoes or risk further legal trouble.
Dr. F H Spedding of Iowa State College presented a paper at the Atoms for Peace Conference in Geneva explaining a method to purify uranium by melting it with silver. The process causes the silver to carry away fission products and plutonium, leaving purer uranium, with ashes usable as radiation sources for sterilization and therapy.
Sgt. James C. Gallagher, 23, was found guilty by an eight member court martial at Fort Jay on Governors Island of unpremeditated murder in 1951, alleging he killed three American POWs in Korea and cooperated with captors. He faces life imprisonment with possible parole after 10 years. The verdict stemmed from 15 days of testimony. sentencing will follow after leniency hearings.
The Swedish luxury liner Kungsholm, 65 miles off course, rescued most of the 34 crew of the fire-scarred British collier Argobeam, off Iceland. Skipper George Watson and a skeleton crew remained aboard as the Argobeam, carrying 9,500 tons of coal from Hampton Roads, Virginia, burned and drifted.
Geneva AP report says the United States unveiled two pocket sized atomic X-ray machines that require no electricity and can run up to 20 years without recharge. Officials expect wide use in disasters and other events where power is unavailable. R G Daggs of Fort Knox described the devices at the Atoms for Peace conference. The units use radioactive isotopes from atomic furnaces and replace bulky hospital X-ray equipment.
Rev. W. J. Stevens announced Christian Tabernacle has purchased a ten ton air conditioner installed by local concerns. Although not completely installed, the congregation has enjoyed its benefits since last Sunday, coinciding with the churchs 22nd anniversary.
In Easton Pennsylvania Donato Romano who was gravely injured when a slate rock fell on him in a quarry forty years ago has celebrated his 102nd birthday He recovered and worked in the quarry for eight more years and today enjoys reading newspapers gardening and television His recipe for long life is don’t eat too much don’t drink too much and get plenty of sleep.
Assistant Surgeon General David E. Price told the Federation of Insurance Counsel that polio may become no more dangerous than smallpox or diphtheria in the not too distant future. He cautioned that polio is not yet beaten and that the effectiveness of Salk vaccine remains to be determined this year until adequate statistical analyses are completed.
William J. Rainer, 48, spotted his daughter Delores in a Munici pal Railway bus advertising card. The image matched his separated wife’s daughter, traced Delores to Sausalito, and the two reunited after a two year search. Delores had grown up with relatives after her mother remarried and settled in the area.
Vernon McLellan preacher and musician will headline special youth services at Christian Tabernacle on Sunday. The event spotlights youth and foreign missions with McLellan, editor of Christ's Ambassador Herald, noted for RevivalTime broadcasts. He hails from Vancouver and studied music at Trinity College in London. he will perform violin pieces at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. A vesper service closes the day at 6:30. All are welcome.

Albert Glider, 79, a former Wellman resident, died at his farm near North English on Thursday. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in North English Catholic church with burial in Wellman cemetery. He was born in Wellman, son of George and Myra Ferguson Glider, and married Anna Wehrle of Wellman. Survivors include wife, two children Marvin of North English and Arlene Garringer of Cedar Rapids, four grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
Airman Daniel Schmidt plans to personally file divorce papers at a secret Sacramento location. The suit, filed against Una Schmidt, cites extreme cruelty and seeks custody of their young son Daniel J. The attorney says there will be no adultery allegations or public mudslinging, calling the move a modern Enoch Arden moment.

About 4 000 protesters gathered before the United States Embassy in Seoul while demonstrations spread to Kunsan air base and Wolmi Island. Pre-dawn attempts to storm Kunsan gate were repelled by American guards with hoses, and police stopped a bleary bid to attack later in the day.

Eastern Iowa Light and Power Cooperative directors heard a report from C M Stanley on atomic energy plants as a future electricity source. The cooperative grew from under 50 KWH per member monthly in 1936 to over 500 KWH by 1955. President Frank Sherburne noted rising demand and a 1954 purchase of more than 52 million KWH.
Unofficial sources say Clement Attlee aged 72 leader of the British Labour Party is recovering from a cerebral thrombosis. His wife confirmed illness though a Labour Party spokesman would not comment on the Mirror report that he suffered a blood clot on the brain.
Mrs. Warren Dare, city hostess, greeted Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ribbeck who moved from Solon Iowa to 1103 2 East Main Street. They are Trinity Lutheran Church members. Mrs. Ribbeck taught in Solon and Mr. Ribbeck will teach in the high school. The Bob Cowan family at 1112 East Washington Street moved from Montezuma Iowa after seven years. Sons Jerry 13 will attend Junior High, John 8 goes to Lincoln. Mr. Cowan works at Fareway and belongs to Masons and American Legion.
Gov Leo A Hoegh ate canned fried grasshoppers at a Des Moines news conference and described them as a cross between chicken livers and licorice. Reporters declined samples as Mohr of Dallas Texas markets the insects from his 3000 acre Iowa ranch near Blairsville.
Washington AP Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson ordered the Army Navy and Air Force to begin immediate training to uphold the Military Code of Conduct. He urged wide public support from federal departments schools churches industry labor and agriculture to spread the code. The code sets six principles for servicemen including readiness to die for country not surrender and to reveal only basic identifying information. Wilson directed officials to explain the code and educate troops in democracy and anti Communist fallacies.
Richard Carpenter, 26, captured after a gun battle that left Detective William Murphy dead and rookie Officer Clarence Kerr wounded at a theater and subway. He confessed to the two shootings and said officers fired first. Leonard Powell helped trap him by feigning a call to police, ending a 24 hour hostage ordeal in Powell’s apartment.
Mrs Anna Smithart 74 of Fairfield died Thursday noon at Mills nursing home Mt Pleasant after lingering illness. She lived mostly in Richland and Fairfield. Services 2 30 p m Saturday at Richland Friends church with Rev Robert Palkert and Rev Esther O Figgins. Burial in Friends cemetery. Survivors include three sons Lester Monmouth Clayton Ottumwa Albert Mt Pleasant a daughter Seth Hart Richland three sisters L Lewman Fairfield H C Hastings Fairfield and Mrs Dave Hubbs Muscatine and two brothers Terry Tumwa and Russell Richland. Preceded in death by four sisters one brother two sons and one daughter.
