Dunlap farmer Anson Riesland aged 49 and father of nine died after drinking poison mistaken for beer at a threshing party on the Fred Peters farm July 25. Neighbor William A. Hein signed a statement admitting he accidentally placed an unmarked poison bottle among beer bottles.
About one hundred striking button cutters at five Automatic Button plants in Muscatine resumed work after a walkout Tuesday. Spokesmen said wage reductions were the issue and that a price-equalizing agreement across all shops had been reached.

Appointment of Reverend Edwin E. Voigt from Evanston Illinois as pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church Iowa City was decided by the local church executive committee. Dr Voigt will arrive in Town City early September and conduct his first service on September 13.
IOWA CITY reports a new biography of the late Pacha el Bagdadi, governor of Fez, by Dr. Christian Richard of the University of Iowa school of religion. The Paris edition has just appeared with first copies arriving in Town City. Richard was commissioned to write the Pacha biography while in Morocco two years ago studying Mohammedan civilization.
Mrs. Lester Orr operated a Creston restaurant for roughly ten weeks in 1938. The note highlights a short tenure of a local proprietor in Washington County and reflects brief community business activity during that period.
London reports efforts to secure a practical hands off agreement among European powers to prevent the Spanish civil war from widening. Germany warns Spain after the Kamerad seizure while Britain revokes licenses for arms exports and tightens wartime naval exercises. A Belgian embargo blocks air war materials to both sides.
Claire Beatty and Bryan Coakley remain at Washington county hospital with injuries from a late yesterday truck crash. Howard Miller is expected to be discharged soon with minor injuries. At the Jacob Frank corner the Risk truck collided with a Cy Bush truck driven by Dan Rohrer. The Bush gravel truck struck the Risk machine rear knocking passengers from the Risk vehicle. Both drivers unhurt, but Coakley and Beatty suffered painful non dangerous injuries and were taken to the county hospital. View obstructed by approaching rain contributed to the crash.
The Dutch Creek fair opens Thursday August 27 and runs through Friday with Rev. Carl W. Klein chairing preparations. Lt. Gov. Kraschel and Senator Dickinson will speak, chicken dinners, home talent show Big Ideas, band concerts, softball, contests, marionette show, farm exhibits, and a new coon hunt. Grounds are J. H. Ramee farm on Dutch creek east bank, accessible from Washington and Keota routes.

Moberly Missouri August 20 fire and deadly fumes thwarted a rescue for four trapped miners. State Mine Inspector Arnold Griffith led eleven volunteers into the mine last night but gas and fire halted digging near the cavern. Crowd of about five thousand watched as Griffith announced the efforts were fruitless.
At the Davenport convention the League of Municipalities elected J. F. Walters of McGregor as president. Thomas F. E. Martin, mayor of Iowa City, was chosen vice president. Frank Pierce of Marshalltown was secretary treasurer and Miss Minnie Offman of Marshalltown was re appointed assistant state secretary.
DES MOINES The tenth annual meeting and anniversary of the Iowa Poultry Improvement association will be observed here Sept. 22 to 24. Plans are under way to bring Secretary of Agriculture Henry A. Wallace here for the closing day.
Brighton public schools set to open Monday August 31 with Supt. H C Messer in district office the week of August 24 28 to register high school students. Summer repairs and new equipment added. a rental system for new high school texts introduced. High school faculty remains mostly the same except Tom Karpan of Parsons replaces Clarence Zeigler as coach.
John Woods 72 died about five this morning in Muscatine while visiting nieces since mid June. He had been in failing health for years but remained active until a recent illness. His body was taken to Sherman’s funeral home. Funeral services are set for Saturday at two o’clock in the United Presbyterian church, with Dr. B. F. Schwartz of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. He lived in Washington county most of his life and belonged to the United Presbyterian Church, having earlier joined the Westminster and West Chester churches and later the Washington U P church for more than twenty years. He was widely liked.
Rev and Mrs F G Robbing and daughter Betty Jane from Eldon were in Washington today. Rev Robbing formerly served as the Methodist minister at West Chester.
A Scottie on a walk was reported missing and tracked by a clever want ad that drew attention to the dog’s disappearance. The ad helped locate the pet as neighbors coordinated to bring it safely home.
A free driver fitness clinic will be offered tomorrow and Saturday at the Tucker & Eicher garage under the Washington County Safety Council. The tests aim to identify weak driving habits as part of a state wide effort to reduce accidents. The anti accident drive also features the Jimmy Remember film at State Theater tonight and at Wellman Theater Friday Sunday.
July revenue from inspection fees collected by the state department of agriculture totaled 9490.55 with expenses of 1844.3. Dairy and food restaurant inspectors gathered the licenses, raising July’s total to 46358.21. Survived by father Frank Whitaker and siblings Fred Albert Eugene Ada Violet Velma Edna Edith Mrs T A Barnes Crawfordsville was in town shopping today.
