Des Moines reports Rep. Guy M. Gillette Democratic nominee offers a suit of clothes to anyone proving New Deal measures strip constitutional rights. The bet applies to women. a dress substitutes for a call if needed. Critics must provide specifics. the proposal also targets embezzlement by relief agency executives and any tax increases.
State Highway Patrolman Kegley recovered one stolen car in Burlington but the thief escaped in another to boost the average. He chased a light coupe identified as a stolen Ottumwa car along Highway 84 into West Burlington where the driver abandoned it and fled. Minutes later a demonstrator touring car parked nearby was reported missing, as well as the thief.
Mrs. Jeanette Mann of Des Moines, state WCTU president, argues Iowa’s heat may be divine punishment for wet politics. She calls Lt. Gov. Nels G. Krasch el a calamity and Gov. Clyde L. Herring a tragedy if elected, while stressing the WCTU remains non-partisan.
DES MOINES Miss Margar et C Morris twenty last year's Polk county 4 H club president and daughter of Mr and Mrs Lewis Morris of Grimes died at her home. She led sewing demonstrations for the 4 H club and had been ill three years, bedridden three weeks, death due to Hodgkins disease.

Iowa farm incomes rose sharply in the first six months of 1936, totaling 54 million in June and 254.139 million for the period. Leslie M. Carl, agricultural statistician, said receipts were about 24.688 million higher than the same period in 1935 and 90.894 million above 1934, aided by roughly 20 million in federal benefits and drought related livestock sales. Iowa led the nation in agriculture income for the six months and for June, with California and Illinois following.
Dr. B. F. Schwartz arrives home from a nearly two month journey to Europe and the Holy Land. He landed in Montreal on Sunday and says he is glad to be home away from warfare increasingly evident in Europe. Journal readers remember his travel letters titled Observations of a Preacher Globe-Trotter.
Washington high school announces 2020 registration dates as classes begin Monday September 7. Miss Della Patton, the principal, lists ninth grade August 26 27 eleventh September 1 tenth September 2 and twelfth August 31 for enrollment with course arrangements. If students cannot attend those days, arrangements for enrollment before opening will be accepted. Junior college dean and junior high principal will announce their dates in the coming two weeks.
Henry Kron was seen yesterday in Riverside as a shopper in town, drawing local curiosity and noting brisk storefront activity. The sighting places Kron in the downtown shopping district during daytime hours.
Rufus Swan, 27, a Black gambler, surrendered to Chicago police after learning he was suspected. He admitted the killing following five hours of questioning. A notebook with his name was found on a fire escape under Mrs. Trammell's window, linking him to the crime.
Des Moines reports indicate a record setting heat wave with a 112 degree high at Logan and August possibly the hottest month on record in Iowa. Light showers and a cooling breeze broke the heat wave, with some areas receiving half inch rains easing conditions for a day or two.
Miss Stella Palmer, formerly a bookkeeper at the Washington National Bank, is highlighted among local Washington County residents in today’s notes.
MOSCOW August 19 INS Gregory Zinovieff Leon Kammeneff and several others pleaded guilty at the opening of their trial on charges of conspiracy to assassinate Josef Stalin and to commit other terrorist acts. German secret police allegedly conspired with them to upset the Soviet government. Trotsky and his son Sedoff were convicted by default of guiding plots. Death penalty expected. Zinovieff and Kammenoff could become the first old Bolshevik leaders executed.
The Chamber of Commerce sold the Guzeman house yesterday to Earl Simpson. Located on South Town Avenue near Lincoln School, this old residence, built by Washington pioneer John Guzeman, will be remodeled and improved.
Des Moines August 19 With a total of 619 979 automobile licenses issued up to August 1 the number of licensed vehicles in Iowa was 2131 more than in all of 1935 and is expected to rise further. On July 31 1935 the number of licensed cars in Iowa was 28855 Lew Wallace of the State motor vehicle department reported.
In Washington county during the five months ending May 31, 1936, AAA rental and benefit payments totaled 212,044. The three-year county total reached 1,363,229. Corn hog payments were 211,881 and wheat 163. Nationally, Iowa has released 108,056,959 in rental and benefit payments over three years, with 14,764,929 paid in the first five months of the current year: corn hog 14,586,116. wheat 169,574. sugar 9,239. The nationwide total of such payments is 1,108,322,870.
Iowa's average rural taxpayer, Mr. Typical Farmer, will get a 21.63 three point tax refund this fall on the second half property tax bill, reflecting seven months of sales and income taxes in 1936. The July box score shows 141.25 in direct taxes paid so far this year, with 4.19 in July alone.
Floyd A. Nunn a 28 year old six foot four factory worker and his 20 year old wife were held after Nunn confessed to tunneling from a Flint sewer toward a bank vault over three months. He dug in three hour shifts beneath water up to his knees using a two foot square hole and dirt carried back to the sewer. The plan collapsed when the tunnel cave in last night and Nunn said his wife’s driving had driven the car 4000 miles during the endeavor. The couple quarrelled and separated after the discovery.
Seven people were injured when two cars collided on a dirt road two and a half miles west of Dublin. Notable injuries were minor, with victims including C. L. Mourer, Walter Hotle, Mrs Mourer, Mrs Hotle, Donna Lee Mourer age one, and children Alice Mourer four, Wande Hotle eighteen, Ruth Hotle fourteen, while Mourer and Walter Hotle Jr. escaped unhurt. Both cars were badly mashed.
In Moberly Missouri four miners trapped by a shaft fire are believed dead after a rescue team led by Arnold Griffith, state mine inspector, failed to reach them in three hours. Officials say fumes thwarted the effort and hope is fading. bodies expected to be recovered soon.

A divorce petition lists Mr. and Mrs. Will H. Reetz married in New Hampton in 1930 with two children Marie and William 4&8. The couple, said to be from Kansas City, fear an imminent raid to reach the children. Victims named include Edward Stone ner Demmer Sexton Geo. T. Dammeron a mule driver and a man known only as Mac who began work at a mine yesterday.
