The Davenport theater begins a buildup for the opening of the Al Jolson film Wonder Bar. The movie has already played in Washington for many weeks, and the record keeper notes the dates blur from memory.
A CCC camp for soil erosion work near Sigourney has been approved with 240 enrollees. Army officers inspected the site last week. About $10,000 will be required and the camp will include 18 buildings.
Ten Sea Scouts affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America launch a river voyage from Davenport into the Mississippi River on Friday and plan to navigate the Henri Pin canal to connect with Lake Michigan en route to the World's Fair.
Poor weather kept crowds low at the Davenport Mississippi Valley Fair. On the final night refunds were issued after the promoter refused to perform without payment, leaving about 1000 attendees disappointed over six days of bad attendance.
Aldo Mitchell, a 50 year old veteran, defeated 19 year old Joe Von Maur in a tightly contested 36 hole final at the Arsenal Golf tournament in Rock Island. Mitchell edged ahead on the last hole, closing with a 4 to 6 finish as Von Maur faltered. Mitchell had previously won the Arsenal event in 1905.
Clista Millspaugh of Nil Pleasant is hailed as the healthiest girl in the United States by judges at the World’s Pair ex. She attributes her health to milking several ewes daily, hunting Indian game, and playing. She plans to nurse someday.
Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Hampton on Wednesday for Joe S Rays an antique Indian snake charmer. Rays died from gangrene infection caused by a snake bite. He was with a tent show at the Clarion Legion day celebration and was taken to Lutheran hospital in Hampton where his arm was amputated in a last effort to save his life.
James Pribyl a 51 year old Richmond farmer died Sunday at Mercy hospital Iowa City after a brief illness pleurisy was the cause He had been improving before death Funeral services will be held in Richmond Methodist church burial in Richmond cemetery He leaves Edith Wollrab his wife two children Vera and Harold and siblings Frank Kos Hav el Sojka He was born April 24 1888 in Richmond area and lived there except for a year in Colorado The baby daughter of Donald Mapel died Saturday and was buried at Mt Olivet Riverside
Two administration leaders plan talks in Des Moines during the state fair. Postmaster General James A. Farley will speak at the Shrine Temple on August 22 and AAA Administrator Chester Davis will address Farm Bureau days at the state fair on August 27.
A training school for township supervisors tasked with checking compliance by Washington county farmers on corn hog contracts is underway at city hall. County Chairman O. Patter son presides with E. S. Dyas of the Ames extension department as instructor. A morning session occurs with another at 1 pm after lunch, as 45 named supervisors and some township aides attend. Compliance checks precede the November 15 payments, with first payments likely within two weeks after county relief from federal suspension.
Iowa’s 99 counties are directed to raise three million dollars more in relief funds in 1935 than in 1934 to continue receiving federal relief after January. FE. H. Mulcock, Iowa FERA director, writes that maximum levies must be increased in three relief funds including poor relief soldiers' relief and emergency relief.
Charles Bush of west of town was sentenced Saturday by Justice of the Peace J. E. Bovee to thirty days in the county jail after he pled guilty to drunkenness.

Sunset Park hosted a major audience for the Washington Municipal band concert with 860 to 900 in noon picnics and at least 1 500 present for the 3 30 performance. Reunions included the Orris clan with 1060 attendees and the Hesseltine group about 125.
Funeral services for Speaker Henry T. Rainey are planned at Greene County courthouse in Carrollton. The White House said President Roosevelt would likely attend, as Rainey’s death creates a political gap for New Deal legislation. Rainey, a St. Louis hospital death, was a key New Deal ally and long served as speaker of the House. Mrs. Rainey may seek his Illinois seat. potential successors include Hymes, McDuffie, and Bankhead.

The story follows a China raised American who returns home naive to politics and is unwittingly drawn into a scheme that makes him mayor. The comedy delivers steady laughs with less slapstick and is considered one of the best entertainments in years.
Laree audiences attended the annual mission festival at Trinity Lutheran church with sermons by Rev. T Meibohim and Rev. P L Bornhoeft. Tev J Cetjen of Oskaloosa preached in the morning and discussed obedience as a path to blessings in the afternoon. Visitors from southeastern Iowa attended and Pastor Meibohm and Walter Ocetjen traveled to Keystone for a synodical Lutheran meeting.

The NRA steel labor board in Pittsburgh challenges section 7a while Minneapolis faces a 48 hour general strike threat. Chicago bus drivers press mediation as union reps arrive. Mrs C D Ford of Geneseo IL visits Warren family in Geneseo.
Washington saw a temperature swing from 47 on Saturday to 76 on Sunday as cool air moved in. Des Moines reports statewide cooler highs around 61 degrees difference from weekend highs, with scattered precipitation and forecasts of continued cool weather.
