Ford Wins GOP Nomination On First Ballot At Convention

President Ford secured the Republican presidential nomination on the first ballot defeating Ronald Reagan as the party united. Ford named his running mate, Senator Howard Baker, and thanked delegates after a long, hard convention in Kansas City.

Jimmy Carter to visit Iowa State Fair in Des Moines

Democrat presidential hopeful Jimmy Carter visits Des Moines for an overnight stay and speech at the Iowa State Fair. He attends a beer and peanut gathering at a Des Moines area farm, spends the night, then a breakfast fundraiser and a farm policy talk at the fairgrounds to aid the state party's voter registration program.

No decision reached in Highland probe of supt. Walling

Highland Board of Education met over five hours in closed session to probe allegations of misused school funds by Supt. James W. Walling. No resolution was made and a further session is set for Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Walling, hired in 1975, has not worked recently and may take temporary leave. The investigation centers on telephone bills, vacation time, and budget discrepancies flagged by sources. About 75 onlookers attended and questioned directors before the session.

Two traffic wrecks report in Washington County

Washington County sheriff's officers investigated two one car crashes Wednesday causing about 1800 dollars in damage. Michael A. Gearin drove off West Fifth Street after running a stop sign and overturned in a ditch. John O. Paine struck a wandering steer on Highway One seven miles north with no injuries.

Iowa issues color photo licenses at the state fair

Des Moines, UP I The Iowa Department of Transportation offers new color photo drivers licenses at the state fairgrounds. Attendees can convert valid licenses for $1, renewals cost $5 for two years or $10 for four years. Processing takes about 90 seconds and yields a laminated license. Those under 18 receive licenses with red squares under the photo to mark ineligibility for beer.

Wellman Council Delays Minors Taverns Plan

Wellman city council tabled action on a proposed ordinance banning minors from taverns after a first reading on August 2. A petition with 110 signatures urged allowing minors with parents, but many signatures were invalid or from non residents. The council postponed final action to hear adults who signed the petition.
