Iowa 1976 migratory waterfowl stamps on sale statewide

Iowa hunters must purchase a $1 migratory waterfowl stamp for the 1976 season, available from county recorders and license outlets. The Iowa Conservation Commission notes more than 70,000 stamps were bought in 1975 and that funds fund waterfowl conservation programs.

4-H exhibitors win blue ribbons at Iowa State Fair

Washington County 4-Hers earned high honors with blue ribbons and purples across swine beef and horse divisions. Rob Johnson of Washington won a purple for his Duroc barrow. Joella Barnes and Dave Barnes of Brighton won purples in showmanship and gifts. market pigs placed third overall and purple in herdsmanship. Mike Schneider of Riverside led Washington County in market beef with 14th place among 800 head, and Kirk Soukup of Ainsworth placed sixth in Purebred Angus Heifers. Rodney Miller and Mike Nisly of Kalona earned purples and blues in horse and trail events.

Pickup truck injures motorcyclist near Hy-Vee store

Verne FE Richardson 71 of Washington and John R. Wilson 22 of rural Washington collided near the Hy-Vee Store on West Madison Thursday morning. The cycle sustained about $400 damage and Wilson received minor injuries from a local doctor visit. Richardson faced a city charge for failure to yield after leaving the Imperial gas station driveway and crossing the highway into the Hy-Vee lot.

Consumer prices rise 0.5 percent in July data show

Labor Department reports the CPI up 0.5 percent seasonally adjusted in July, a 6 percent annual rate since April. Food costs eased yet medical services surged 13 percent, travel costs rose, and housing/mortgage expenses added to the higher cost of living while wages kept pace only modestly.
