Washington man dies after alley shooting by police
Leslie E. Smithburg, 26, was shot by Washington Police Officer Rodney Strabala after an early morning confrontation at a Jack & Jill Food Store alley. Washington approves mandatory garbage service and contract

Washington businessman John W Lee dies at 59
John W. Lee, a longtime Washington insurance and real estate broker, died Monday evening at University Hospital in Iowa City after a monthlong illness. Funeral set Thursday at 2 p.m. at Washington United Methodist Church, with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials to cancer research at University Hospital. Lee, born January 6, 1916 in Woodward, Iowa, served in WWII and was active in local boards, chambers, and school booster efforts. He is survived by his wife Virginia, two daughters, six grandchildren, a brother, and four sisters.

Longshoremen stopped loading two ships at Houston amid an AFL-CIO nationwide maritime boycott aimed at blocking American grain shipments to the Soviet Union.
