Democratic presidential hopeful Jimmy Carter plans a Davenport visit Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as guest of honor at a Carter Country Buffet fundraiser in the Clayton House Motor Lodge. Tickets cost $15, or $25 for two, organized by Carter's first Congressional district committee chaired by Harry Baxter of Burlington. County coordinator Mrs. George Krogmeier of Washington will distribute tickets in Washington County. Carter leads Iowa Democrats in a recent poll and is viewed as a strong contender.

Rains Aid Iowa Crops Amid Drought Threat to Fair
United Press Interne reports soaking rains across western and central Iowa helped corn yields damaged by midsummer drought. The system threatened the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines where President Ford was to speak. Two inches fell at Clarion and Sioux City saw heavy rain. Council Bluffs also reported heavy rain. Elsewhere the Missouri River Valley faced hail and gusty winds from storms.

Firemen Die in Gulf Oil Refinery Blaze in Philadelphia
In a massive two-fire incident at Gulf Oil Co refinery in south Philadelphia, six firefighters were trapped. Bodies of two firemen were recovered about 27 hours after the first blaze, with one more dead and three others missing. The eleven alarm fire injured twelve to fourteen additional firefighters.

New Farm Count Redefinition Sparks Outcry

Washington via UPI AFL-CIO President Meany says dock workers will not load grain for the Soviet Union until the Ford administration guarantees protection for American consumers and shippers. He notes price rises since Russian sales began and urges U.S. government guarantees and a one third to two thirds cargo split favoring American ships. The meeting with four maritime unions followed prior threats to withhold grain and was chaired by Thomas Gleason of the International Longshoremen's Association.

Bronfman Kidnapping Ends With Release In Brooklyn
Samuel Bronfman II, 21, was found unharmed in a Brooklyn one bedroom apartment after eight days of pressure. Dominick Byrne, 53, and Mel Lynch, 37, were charged with extortion by mail as FBI and police recovered a $2.3 million ransom. Bronfman was taken August 9 from Yorktown Heights and later transported to his father Edgar Bronfman Jr. in New York.
