Two-Man Patrols Initiated By City Police
Mayor Harold Johnson announced two police officers will patrol in shifts in Washington on a temporary two man basis. The move follows a fatal early Tuesday shooting by Officer Rodney Strabala of 26 year old Leslie E. Smithburg at about 4 15 a.m. The police reserve will expand from six to eleven, with five new reservists sworn in at City Hall: Jerry Hanshaw Steve Johnson Robert Kelley Charles Lucas and Carroll Kenny.

Jobless pay rises in Washington County July totals
Washington County paid unemployment benefits of 58790 in July up 24 percent from June as the Iowa Employment Security Commission notes. The July total covers 858 weeks of insured unemployment for eligible residents, with 44659 in June covering 668 weeks. The July increase partly reflects the July 6 raise in the maximum weekly payment from 80 to 107. Nationwide Iowa unemployment benefits rose to 11.6 million in July from 9.6 million in June. About 170 county residents received compensation in July versus 135 in June.
