Rioting erupted in Casablanca as protests rose against the exile of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Youssef. French officials in Paris and Casablanca feared a broader confrontation as extremist groups circulated threats and clashes with forces escalated into the night.
In Saigon Indochina several new American automobiles were blown up by terrorist bombs soon after unloading at the port quay. No injuries were reported in the latest anti foreign terrorism wave that has struck the capital with at least 35 bombings last month including cars buildings and people.
Funeral services were held in Grand Junction Colorado for Dr Floyd Henry Weidlein formerly of Wellman and Palisade Colorado He was born December 25 1887 in Geneseo Illinois and practiced medicine in Wellman Iowa before serving in World War I He is survived by his wife Lena Herr two children five grandchildren and a brother Guy and sister Mrs Viola Bash of Wellman Iowa
Dr. Br Baker of the Southern Research Institute in Birmingham said at the University of New Brunswick seminar that a cure for cancer could arrive within 20 years. He cited chemotherapy’s success against pneumonia and tuberculosis and predicted major cancer cures through drugs in the near future.
Prime Minister Nehru announced that Indian troops would move to Assam to halt violence in the Naga tribal region. He reported 22 government casualties including five Assam Rifles soldiers and 10 injuries, while insurgents suffered 14 dead and 12 wounded.
Miliary announces completion of plans for automatic telephone service in Washington with a new $375000 facility to be built on 217 East Second Street. The L. F. Harding property will host a modern air conditioned fire resistant building ne ar the current site, with construction starting spring 1956.
President Eisenhower ordered a six point code guiding armed forces to be ready to die, not surrender, and give no information to captors. The Burgess Committee urged training with American ideals and cooperation with churches and schools to counter enemy methods and ensure responsibility beyond the battlefield.
Iowa officials announced the final schedule for the Iowa State Fair August 27 through September 5. Headliners include a Gene Autry rodeo and a national livestock show with over 8 000 prize animals. The program features auto races, horse events, a fireworks display and many expositions. Secretary L B Cunningham called it the greatest show ever presented.
The Ames Laboratory of the Atomic Energy Commission described a practical thorium production method at the Atoms of Peace Conference in Geneva. Dr. H A Wilhelm outlined a process yielding high quality thorium metal at lower cost, with potential to extend future atomic fuel supplies U-233 may form when thorium absorbs a neutron.
Cars operated by David Sipple and Clinton Watts collided in Toledo ending 90 years of accident free driving between them.
Chicago police pursue Richard Carpenter, 26, a two gun bandit tied to two killings and a subway shooting. Detec tive William Murphy was killed on a subway platform and Patrolman Clarence Kerr was wounded. A man claiming to be Carpenter telephoned police, and fingerprints tied him to a car used in Murphy’s slaying.
An American farm delegation touring central Asia reports Siberian visits with camel rides and a lucky broken rib after a reception with Uzbek officials. They tour virgin lands, observe Soviet wheat and corn efforts, and note potential food security for a growing population of over 215 million.
The London Daily Mail reports the outlawed Irish Republican Army says it had no part in the Rhyl raid. Diamid MecDiarmaida says there was no proper planning and IRA men do not mask faces or chatter. An Arborfield raid succeeded in seizing weapons before guards intervened.
Iowa officials announce a finalized plan to tie together short wave radio in an emergency. From Des Moines main control, 99 counties and 8 area centers would relay alerts to about 1,500 amateur radio operators statewide.
In Fraser Colorado President Eisenhower fished St Louis Creek on a cool cloudy day catching a 17 inch two pound rainbow on his first cast. He and companion Aksel Nielsen landed 16 fish in three hours with a daily limit of 10 per fisherman. He balances fishing with work and leisure during the five day mountain retreat.
Artemus Brown of the YMCA announced that Richard Thompson of St Paul Minnesota has accepted the position as boys secretary at the YMCA. Thompson is 23, single, Macalester graduate in education and music, and worked this summer at the Minneapolis YMCA. He belongs to the Congregational church and will arrive by September 1.
The United Nations command accuses Communist forces of deliberately shooting down an unarmed U S Air Force T 6 trainer near the Korean truce line. A second U S plane searching for wreckage was fired upon inside U N territory. Both crews were not confirmed as survivors.
Rep. Carl T. Durham warns that U S aid to peaceful atomic energy could enable other nations to build A bombs. He calls for new guarantees of control over breeder reactors and fissionable material in overseas reactors, as Atoms For Peace progress reports emerge at the U N conference.
Graveside rites set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Ainsworth cemetery for Robert Allen Simpson one day old son of Laird Junior Simpson and Jimmie Lou Franks died July 30 in Cirencester England where the family is stationed with government forces. Jones funeral home in charge burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survivors include parents in England one brother Michael Laird and paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Laird Simpson of Ainsworth.
