Washington County in 1875 From Old State Atlas
Bruce Cowden explores an 1875 Iowa atlas found by Dr. George Kerr. The atlas shows Washington County with sub carboniferous soil, a climatological rainfall line, and legislative districts, noting district shifts and a sixth judicial district that then included Jefferson and Marion. It features rural homes with gingerbread architecture and portraits of state officials, all with beards.

Atlas notes Washington county towns and old rail plans
The 19th century atlas documents Washington and Brighton layouts, with Washington showing 25 blocks and added areas while noting no town north of the Rock Island tracks. It marks a proposed Cedar Rapids St Louis railroad through Sigourney and lists 1875 populations for county towns and colored residents, plus a brief county post office history and mail routes. It ends with local sale notices and Friday auctions at area barns.
