Burlington man John Jacobs, 53, of Binford North Carolina, employed by J. H. Fisch Co. of Barn esville Minnesota, was critically injured in a fall from scaffolding while working on an elevator construction near Mediapolis Iowa.
Des Moines inspectors were ordered to remove from sale any products offered as milk that are made wholly or partly from vegetable fats and oils, as reported by Dr. Thomas L Curran the secretary of agriculture.
Charles City, Sent. PP. C. Lapham, chairman of the Iowa high school activities committee, called a meeting of all superintendents and principals of Iowa schools to consider a plan for coordinating activities of Iowa high schools. The meeting will be at Des Moines Saturday.
Cedar Falls Paul Menney 35 a Fairbank Lester township school board member was sentenced to three days in jail by Justice L V Miller on an assault and battery charge. Faylie Trumweaver 70 Dunkerton justice of the peace brought the charge and testified Menney struck him in the stomach while stopping a fist fight between Menuey and Henry Trumbauer a nephew of the justice.
Ottumwa safety commissioner Harry Swenson proposed a dedicated bicycle crossing over Market Street Bridge. The plan would convert one sidewalk into a bike path to separate cyclists from pedestrians after a cyclist killed 73 year old Mrs. Lavina Dale on the sidewalk over two weeks ago.
Indianola sheriff reports garage owner Lu cas Heidman was held up two miles south of Milo by two hitchhikers who bound him took his shoes clothes and suitcase before driving away in his car with $43. The incident occurred after the two hitchhikers stopped to rob him.
A truck loaded with three tons of dynamite and 12 000 caps collided with an automobile near Humboldt and overturned into a ditch. The dynamite and caps were scattered over a wide area as both vehicle and auto left the road.
Homer S. Cummings, the United States attorney general, reportedly acted beyond constitutional bounds by rating watermelons at a party hosted by Daniel C. Rover, secretary of commerce, at his Washington, D. C. home. The event raised questions about legal authority and propriety.
Three new instructors were elected by the Washington board of education to replace last year’s resignations. Thomas M. Parsons takes biology duties at the junior college and high school after degrees at the State University of Iowa and two years teaching there. Media Hill Fisher, from Seward Nebraska, will lead girls' physical training across the junior college high school and junior high after Nebraska and Idaho teaching stints. Roberta Stone of Canton Missouri will teach music at the junior college and high school with a master's from the State University of Iowa and prior work in Canton and Iowa City.
Final arrangements are made for a six act air circus next Sunday at 2 30 sponsored by the local American Legion post. Headlining is Faye Lucille Cox 29 wife of the circus managing director who will parachute from 40000 feet dropping 9000 feet before opening her chute. Cox holds three world records and is ranked America's top jumper. Other acts include Jim Christman performing upside down maneuvers and stunt man M C Cox presenting a mystery act with National Air Race association ties.
Crawfordsville plans to bid for the Iowa baby health championship at the state fair. Margery Anne Cherryholmes of Crawfordsville is among the first of 700 entries. Four hundred dollars in trophies and special awards will be distributed. The event runs Aug 27 to Sept 3 with exams by 36 Iowa baby specialists and parental consultation.
Washington county dentists planned an annual picnic at the country club with golf for men bridge for wives and a picnic supper depending on weather Dr Ed Wheelan of Riverside is president and Dr D D Davis of Washington is secretary About twelve members from various county towns participate in the event
The feature acts include multiple parachute jumps with 1079 jumps credited over twelve years. Faye Lucille Cox, a rare licensed rigger, will pack her parachute in full view of spectators at the field Sunday. further particulars to follow in the Journal.
Rainfall measured .68 of an inch over two days with .45 inches yesterday morning and .23 this morning. Light showers with no wind and minimal lightning. Washington county’s corn gains moisture though not in urgent need. Temperatures ranged from 66 to 86 degrees.
An 18 year old newlywed Mrs Raymond E Burman committed death by her own action in a gas filled kitchen after an argument with her husband. The couple had quarrelled several hours earlier and the husband returned home to find her dead.
At Banning California a CID picket was wounded when gunfire erupted during the week long strike at the San Jacinto tunnel. D. D. Smith suffered lead injuries while George Coverdale and his wife Edith were also shot from ambush near the strike area. In Montreal rioting left three police and several strikers injured as textile mills tried to reopen two closed plants.
Shirley Ann Wikoff eleven day old daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Wikoff of four miles southeast of Brighton died at 8 20 this morning in Washington county hospital born prematurely on Monday August 9 at home she had been well overnight but fell ill yesterday Funeral arrangements not set as of this evening Survivors include parents a brother Keith a sister Helen an older brother Richard died in 1925 Mrs Wikoff to stay in hospital three or four days.
Leon King 33 Paducah Kentucky reported to be in fairly good condition after arriving at the statehouse grounds with a stab wound in the right arm and blood loss. He said the attack occurred while he rode a freight train.
Pioneer groups and patriotic organizations will join in dedicating a monument to William B. Thompson, recognized as the first white settler in Sioux City Woodbury County. The event marks a historic local memory with community involvement.
At a large congregational meeting the United Presbyterian Church voted to invite Rev William Nichol of Sparta Illinois to fill the pulpit on a near Sunday within two weeks. Nichol, a guest preacher recently, impressed many and may be considered for the pastorate after Rev D C Fulton resigned last April. The pulpit committee led by H L Walker reported progress and Nichols was absent due to attendance at the national convention in New Concord Ohio.
The Washington Municipal band joins 39 groups at the eight day Iowa State Fair music festival from Aug 27 to Sept 3. The event features nearly 600 WPA band members in a massed concert Aug 28 with a harmonica and a string band. Cervone's band of Chicago leads the lineup.
Iowa emergency relief administration reports July relief load fell seven percent from June by 1,136 cases. With 97 of 99 counties reporting, total July cases reached 15,392 versus 16,528 in June. Washington county handled 47 cases in June and 37 in July.
Walter Brock, 27, buried after his body was found in a LaVerne area barn July 6. Chief W. W. Akers of the state bureau of investigation ordered exhumation to reexamine the body as life insurance investigators study the case. Brock carried $1,000 life policy with his father as beneficiary on his father's farm.
Governor James Allred dispatched twenty five officers to Dallas to stop flogging kidnapping and interference with free speech after reports that union organizer George Bear was beaten and hospitalized. Bear had been threatened with death and ordered out of town.

Five peasants were killed and at least 26, including five police, injured when peasants of an agricultural party tried to organize a farm strike near Przemysl. Mrs Loren McNeese of Brighton, a linotype operator at the Brighton Enterprise, was in Washington today.
Japan's regular army reinforced for the first time on the Shanghai front as the war widens. Ten thousand Japanese troops advance three miles in north China toward Kiangwan and Woodung while Chinese counterattacks and heavy artillery follow.
A collision near Cotter yesterday involved Martin Bloom of Cedar Rapids and Delbert Foster 4 H club agent from Washington County. No injuries were reported though both vehicles sustained considerable damage.
