Judge F. H. Rice signed an order directing guardians of J. Fred Toy to pay 350 dollars monthly to Marie Breck Toy from March 3, 1937, until the Toy estate is administered. Marie Breck Toy is J. Fred Toy's wife.
Iowa City-Jerry Lemon, 49, of Lineville, is in serious condition at University Hospital with a fractured skull after a tire he was hanging blew out near Lineville. The tire rim struck his face, crushing one side. He is survived by a wife and nine children.
Ottumwa reports Phyllis Dimmitt daughter of Mr and Mrs For rest Dimmitt narrowly escaped suffocation while playing with other children at home. She slipped into a straw stack, was found unconscious with mouth full of chaff and straw, but doctors said her condition improved and she was out of danger.
About 1500 spectators watched six drum and bugle corps and one band compete in a battle of music. The Newton drum corps won first, Des Moines placed second, and Boone girls finished third. Guy Lamb, Boone unit manager, said the Veterans of Foreign Wars post expects funds to send the Boone girls to the national encampment in Buffalo New York.
Alvin Niswander a hospital employee from University City leapt into the Iowa River when his fishing companion Herman Wolf 28 cried for help. He pulled Wolf to a rock bar, saving him from drowning in the swift current.
Darrell Munson, 44, trapped by ignited gas beside his oil company truck, died in a fire while loading fuel for a country trip. He reportedly paused to turn off the gas hose, sparing nearby tanks from possible explosions, according to company officials.
Des Moines reports the Iowa State fair will stage a "thrill day" air show including a plane dive into a frame house. A. R. Corey, secretary, said the event will go ahead, though the Iowa aeronautics commission urged cancellation over hazard and risk of death.
Chet Cornelius of Cedar Rapids now heads tester crew for five county districts including Lee Des Moines Louisa Henry and Washington. He led practical driving tests at the courthouse while Carl Rogers from Clarinda conducted written tests in the basement. Joe Staebell of Albia shifts to Ottumwa to continue licensing duties in another district.
The Leon Beatty Post American Legion books an air show for August 22 headlined by Fay Lucille Cos and her "Aerial Daredevil" Jst Christman of Allentown Pa. The event features five airplanes and a record parachute jump of at least 9 000 feet with Miss Cox. Tickets, parking and crowd plans are managed by Legion volunteers.
The J C Penney store on Washington square marks its thirteenth anniversary this week August 16 1924 under manager D F Barnes formerly of the Peoria Illinois Penney store. Barnes has strong Washington ties and the store is described as a modern local landmark with considerable community support.
Loyalist reports say rebel ranks mutinied on two fronts forcing aerial strikes on their own towns. Insurgents bombed towns in Zaragoza province and faced government reverses in Santander. Madrid reports claim rebels were compelled to attack own troops with machine guns from the air near Hermosa.
Esther Maxwell, superintendent of Jared Sidney Torrance Memorial Hospital in Torrance, California, was unanimously elected a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators. She will wear the college key insignia and attend a meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey, this September.
Sioux City reports 4.29 inches of rainfall the heaviest since 1914 with 3.5 inches of rain falling between three and 4:30 this morning.
Five members tested their dairy herds monthly since the 1927 start. The annual report shows 255 cows produced 2 029 557 pounds of milk and 85 625 pounds of butterfat in the last year with 24.2 cents per pound feed cost and $1.63 return per dollar. Eleven herds surpassed the butterfat average of 335.6 pounds. five cows yielded over 500 pounds of butterfat.
A Washington native, James King known as Jimmy, rose from a North Fifth Avenue home to an executive with the Checker and Yellow Taxicab companies in New York City. He spent eleven years rising from the Checker factory parts desk to a leadership role, travels frequently, and supports his mother Mrs. Anna King and wife from Michigan, with one son Robbie.
In Mantet North Carolina on August 18 President Roosevelt denounced a wealthy minority opposing his policies. He singled out the Chamber of Commerce Liberty League manufacturers and unnamed newspaper owners urging them to condemn popular government over the constitution. He argued they would replace the majority’s will with their own and harm the general welfare.
At Leon Beatty post meeting a nominating committee was selected to report a list of names for voting on September 7 to choose officers for the new year. Officers will be installed in October. Committee: Cloyce Stewart Ted Crone Al Baldrige Bill Brown and Harry Simpson. A committee including Simpson Baldrige and Brown is studying an air show proposed for next Sunday. Reports on the Des Moines state Legion convention were given by Downing Wylie and Simpson.
Albert Levitt petitioned the Supreme Court to disqualify Hugo L Black from seating himself on the high bench claiming constitutional bars prevent a sitting congress member from accepting increased emoluments. Levitt, a former Justice Department aide, filed for leave to petition for an order requiring Black to show cause and sat on the court bar. Levitt resigned from his post earlier this month.
Los Angeles reports say Iowa authorities were asked to hold William C. Johnson, charged with stealing a ten months old baby in a revenge plot, after word the infant was safe. The child’s mother, Mrs Pegey Carr, said she received a wire from Johnson at Muscatine.

Secretary of State Cordell Hull orders a general evacuation of women children and aged Americans from Shanghai and other danger spots. An estimated 1600 to 1700 can be expected to depart the war zone as unrest deepens in the cosmopolitan port.
A final check-up of the top eight 4-H girls in health exams was held at the Washington county health unit. The winner will be announced next Wednesday at the 4-H club fair. Participants include Adda Godber Marian Swan Naomi Kyle June Arlene Knotek Rosella Sheetz Virginia Sheetz Madge Brooks and Mable Finney.
