Washington police reported a Friday incident causing minor injuries to Joy Collins, 6, and Robert J. Grubb, 21, after a bicycle motorcycle collision on East Harrison Street. Both sustained cuts and abrasions. no charges were filed.
DES MOINES Iowa's new gambling law is in effect but social gambling is not permitted until licenses are posted in public view. Deputy revenue director Elliott Hibbs said licenses have not been mailed and requests for applications exceed availability.
Iowa filed 30 warrants against Frank R. West ABP board chairman and Robert E. Lee ABP vice president cattle procurement. Each faces two counts of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretenses after a month long Avoca grand jury probe. Iowa asked Nebraska authorities to detain the two executives amid sealed probe results.
Partly cloudy today with a 30 percent chance of rain and possible thundershowers in the afternoon. Highs in the lower to mid 80s, tonight clearing with a low near 60. Sunday remains partly cloudy with highs in the lower 80s, winds from the south at 5 to 10 mph.
Iowa faces a hurdle in enforcing the helmet and goggles rule due to an objection from the legislative administrative procedures committee over the protective eye device portion. The department of transportation aims to test and certify goggles through the AAMVA standard, with certification hoped by Sept 1.
Fifty six riders were left immobilized Friday when the new sky Glider stalled after motor overheating. Riders hung about 48 feet high for an hour or more, some rescued by firemen using a 100 foot ladder while others descended aluminum ladders. No injuries reported. The ride, 50 feet high, usually only slows for boarding and was inoperative Friday night. This is the ride's first year at the fair.
FBI files released under the Freedom of Information Act detail COINTELPRO tactics in the 1960s including planted news stories counterfeit mail and large scale informant networks within the Ku Klux Klan. Hoover letters show informants in all 14 Klan groups and leadership penetrations aided by 1965 memos claiming murder cases solved and violence reduced in the South.
Harold A. Amrine 48, a Brighton area farmer, died after his tractor overturned on him near his farm. He was born January 18 1927, survived by his mother and a brother, and was a Korean War veteran. Funeral at Hope Lutheran Germanville with services and burial cited. Memorial established in the Hope Lutheran Church.
Jasper County medical examiner ruled that James Bailey of Mentor Ohio died from a single gunshot wound to the neck while riding with two other Hell's Angels members on Interstate 80 near Colfax. A second rider, Richard Vesey, was wounded by a different weapon. Vesey and another cyclist reported hearing shots and seeing flashes before Bailey fell, with investigators pursuing the case.
