A mother Mrs Frank Jones, ten children, and a grandchild fled their burning Des Moines home when a kerosene stove exploded. The husband is working in northern harvest fields. The family escaped with only a few clothes as the rest of their belongings were destroyed.
DES MOINES Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent of public instruction announced Iowa school bus drivers who complete the 1937 38 school year without an accident will be awarded safety certificates. She said there are 2 870 school bus drivers in Iowa.
Ottumwa city milk inspector Carl J. Bartlett reported infractions by restaurants and soda fountains. He noted milk not served in proper beities and pouring milk from bottles into jugs and pails at grocery stores.
U S Professor T G Standing of the University of Iowa sociology department resigns after a 1929 tenure to lead sociology research at Oklahoma A and M College Stillwater Oklahoma He will head sociology research in the college of commerce there.
Des Moines health officials warn residents amid a summer rise in dysentery. City health commissioner Dr. Harry B. Ran som advises light soft foods quiet rest and plenty of fluids to prevent the ailment.
Raymod Swan son 25 of Humeston completed a one inch to the foot scale steam threshing engine. He spent about a year on the project averaging five hours daily. The model is described as the smallest of its type and cost about 3.50 to build with 1.15 spent on paint.
Carl Jungbluth and L A Jones begin building shacks on the Cedar river bank two miles east of Conesville using salvaged lumber from an old Sanford livery barn. Other locals including CC McCutchen and C C Wilson own nearby sites but won’t build this season. The area, 27 miles northeast of Washington, features good timber and water access via a sand point, with a former Muscatine settler having previously attempted a resort there.

The Boy Scouts held a council fire and overnight camp at the Scout camp northwest of town last evening with both troops represented. Scoutmasters John Lemmon and Carleton Haven led the activity while the Iowa City area Scouts organized the council fire. The highlight was a watermelon feed for the attendees. The watermelons were supplied by Harry Sowden.
Mrs. Laura McBride of Havre arrived for a one day visit at the home of her son Howard McBride. She plans to return home tonight.
Pauline Shellabarger 22 of Denver formerly Washington was in a picnic car wreck that killed two young friends. She suffered jaw fractures nose injury brain concussion and a knee break. her condition remained about the same. Her brother Raymond 17 survived uninjured.
Sheriff H. M. Putnam reports three forgeries in two weeks totaling 81.80 with checks cashed at a filling station grocery and beer tavern. Suspects described as two men, one 40s 5'11 180 200 pounds with sandy hair, the other about six feet tall in rough clothes.
At yesterday’s meeting the Washington city council heard the proposed milk ordinance in detail and ordered it to final passage at the September meeting. The measure regulates milk production and sale, inspection of barns and dairies, sanitation, labeling, and quality standards with county health unit cooperation. The ordinance is on file at City Hall for public viewing and comment. Other business included delivery of a new fire truck and plans to install a stoker at the city hall heating plant to save fuel costs.
In Washington on August 17 1941 Senator Royal Copeland launched a bitter attack on Senator Hugo Black Alabama new deal Democrat nominee for associate justice of the Supreme Court alleging Klan sympathy and threatening minority rights safety in his hands. Copeland urged withdrawal of Black’s name for a "new dealer" free from religious and racial prejudice.
Miss Harriett Peel of Chicago directs the WLS barn frolic at Case Field on August 25 27 and 28. She reports talent lined up from Riverside Richmond Kelona Coppock and Washington and aims to include local participants from nearby towns. Tryouts are planned Thursday and Friday evenings as a county county benefit for the Washington Concert band.

Authorities warn Washington county business men to beware of strangers paying by check as sheriff and County Attorney Richard A. Stewart pursue recent forgers. A summer case saw a Washington youth plead guilty to forging a $125 check and begin a prison term.
A mob near Covington lynched Albert Gooden after abducting him from a Memphis jail. He was accused of killing officer Marshall Chester Coyle on July 17 and was found hanged near a bridge five miles from Covington with bullets in his body.
Cedar Rapids reports a three week marriage ending when Ed Lockwood 24 shot and killed Regina Zalumski 21 after an afternoon quarrel. He then shot himself as police arrived following a call from the wife.
The Sanford livery barn, a longtime community fixture, was demolished yesterday by Jack Kupka Pollok Wallace and workers. The four-barn complex dated to the horse and buggy era and stood near Gasoline Alley, the Journal building and local businesses. Carl Jungbluth bought the lot to build a shack on the Cedar River, with remaining lumber used for summer houses.
Lee McAvoy received word in Monmouth Illinois that W. G. Cooley a former resident here died this morning. He was brother of the late Mrs. McAvoy and leaves two sons and a daughter. One son and the daughter live in Monmouth and the other son in Peru Tl. The funeral is set for Wednesday at 2 30 in Monmouth.

President Roosevelt ordered 1,200 more U S marines to Shanghai to reinforce existing protective forces and seek 500000 dollars to evacuate Americans from the danger zone. Hull said no general China evacuation is planned, and marines are sent to protect American lives only. Admiral Vernell requested the move as Shanghai campaigns continue. Tokyo reports Japan plans to split China's forces for a surprise strike, with public support backing the effort.
A Washington county herd owned by Morton Emde north of West Chester topped Iowa for the month with 50.2 pounds of butterfat. The second place herd, owned by Paul McElmell of Greeley Iowa, averaged 46 pounds. The Washington county association ranked second among 58 associations with 29.4 pounds. First place went to Henry county led by Walter Kephart. Dallas Boone association placed third with Wendel Hunt. Iowa county association fourth with its tester. Emde’s herd came from 1,342 tested herds statewide.
