A nor’west weather pattern brought about another half inch of rain yesterday as showers persisted through the week. The afternoon downpour measured 38 of an inch with 10 of an inch in the forenoon and a light evening shower. Temperatures reached 88 degrees, while the low dipped to 69. Strong showers hit Crawfords ville and Ainsworth differentially.
Dick Jurgens and his orchestra paused to watch golfers near Storm Lake. A bus wheel slid over an embankment and two semis along with a road grader were used to pull it back onto the road.
Charles Warkins of Ainsworth Iowa died in an Iowa City hospital after serving as an airman in the Canadian Army 484a unit of the Royal Air Force during World War I. He was discharged with the 48th Wing Demobilization Group and to be buried in Ainsworth Sunday rather than joining the American Legion as yesterday stated.
Nelson declares enrollment drop at Iowa State Teachers college not caused by dormitory rules but by a broader trend and by Iowa’s relatively low teacher certification standards. He cites criticisms from Cedar Falls rooming house owners as based on misperceptions and urges focus on standards and policy.
Thirteen persons passed the automobile driving tests yesterday and received licenses. Two instruction permits were granted. Names include Keith Gillespie, Mr and Mrs J O Criswell Washington Delight R inner Norene McFarland and others from Cedar Rapids Keota Ainsworth Belle Plaine Riverside Well man Wayland and Kart Monson among recipients.
In Governor Wilson's office at Des Moines the resignation of Sadie B Campbell as dean of women is demanded for being "entirely too dictatorial and altogether unsympathetic toward working students."
London dispatch reports German air attacks on Britain virtually stopped for twelve hours since dawn while RLASF raided far into Germany. British bombers penetrated eastern Germany as raids continued, with 75 German planes downed and 22 British losses cited for the prior day. Berlin disclosed British raids last night in retaliation, and Germany declared a complete blockade of the British Isles, warning neutrals of destruction risks.
Don Radda, famed raiser of last summer’s world beating corn stalk, plans to bring a 1940 champion stalk to town for an exhibition at the Journal of ice grounds. The stalk measures three eighths of an inch over twenty feet, rivals last year’s 23 feet 10 inch record, and may contend for Iowa state prizes next Thursday in Oskaloosa with $75 awarded to the tallest stalk. Governor George A Wilson will present Iowa Daily Press association prizes.
A Manchester area farm hand loses 2297 dollars to a Gypsy scam after meeting at a fair. The Gypsy couple, a woman and a man named Straiger, allegedly visit the farmer the next day and promise wealth if he follows their instructions as recounted to Sheriff Carl Anderson.
George Getztenberger of Hazelton plans burial in the suit he wore at his wedding half a century ago. The suit remains in good condition and preserved for the funeral.
A Tama column notes Chief White Wing, a Winnebago Indian from Wisconsin, performing at Tama in a weekend powwow that runs through Sunday. The piece highlights his unique status as a celebrated lure in the Iowa event, with emphasis on cultural entertainment and local interest.
Gov. Harold Stassen of Minnesota and Lt. Gov. B. B. Hickenlooper of Iowa spoke at a celebration opening Highway 169 between Lakota Iowa and Elmore Minnesota. Delegations from both states attended a ceremony at the state line with a parade and music.
Alfred Connell a farm hand in Iowa City faced a disorderly conduct charge after allegedly accosting a young woman on the university campus. Her cries brought help, authorities pursued and captured him nearby. Several molested women were brought to the station to identify the suspect.
Frank Pint, 28, of Independence, employed by Hiliett Construction Co., was electrocuted two miles south of Kiene while handling a cable near a pile driver. The end of the line touched a high line, killing Pint instantly as he tried to free a car stuck in mud.
At Roscoe Turner field the air show features air acrobatics plus two special acts Sunday and Monday. Clem Honkamp of Cincinnati Ohio will fly a 1910 Curtis pusher plane as part of Iowa's Greatest Air Show crowds.
Fire badly damaged a residence owned by Dave Donovan on the corner of West Fifth Street and North Avenue C. Occupants Floyd Edwards and Frank Ryan families escaped with most belongings after oil stove started the blaze. firemen fought to salvage what remained as flames consumed the structure.
A 30 year old aircraft with a modern motor will be shown. The second feature includes a demonstration of piloting a radio controlled robot plane by Prof. Donald Erent of Minneapolis, a recognized authority on radio control.
Iowa attorney general issues three opinions. A justice of the peace may wed anywhere in his home county. A beer dealer cannot give free bottles for ads. Hospitals cannot detain a patient who leaves against medical advice under proper authority.
Lester Ward Freeman, 41, was arrested with 1 448 bottles of liquor in a 1940 Chevrolet coupe and taken to Corydon for arraignment. The items included Scotch and Bourbon mostly in quarts and pints, said to be high priced. Freeman claimed transport from filinoig to Kansas. The liquor was packed tightly in the car.
ELWOOD Indiana August 17 Wendell Willkie accepted the Republican nomination for president endorsing conscription and aid to Britain as defense. He urged debate with Roosevelt, claimed peacetime lines are down, and attacked Roosevelt’s record as liberal and leading the nation toward destruction. Thousands gathered in Callaway Park to hear the GOP standard bearer promise a nationwide stump tour and a battle for American democracy.
Wendell L. Wilkie departed Rushville at 10:36 AM on a special train bound for Elwood. National Chairman Joe Martin led the party notables and reporters, 175 in all, many coming from a national meeting in Indianapolis the previous night. The Wilkies had arrived in Rushville yesterday for a short visit at Mrs. Willkie's former home.
At Elwood Indiana the postmistress says over 100 letters and postcards arrived for the Willkie notification ceremonies. Elwood lies south of here and the large mailing is linked to the acceptance program staged today about 200 miles northwest of Elwood Indiana.
It took the cars of three officers to haul the load here from Oseegla, indicating a substantial shipment requiring police transport.
State tax commission reports July 1940 use tax on motor vehicle and trailer sales totaling 127 457 65 dollars, up from 104 393 41 the previous year. The June increase reflects 1 153 212 more spent on new cars than in July 1939.
