Isolationist senators condemn United States Ambassador Bulitt for urging aid to Britain. Debate on the conscription bill resumes with a quorum, while a defense appropriation of 5.01 billion dollars for a two ocean navy and mechanized army passes the appropriations committee.
George S. Smith of Des Moines, a Civilian Conservation Corps employe, was charged by Highway Patrolman Lawrence Kirsch with speeding and fined $10 after dark in Colfax.
Fort Dodge hosted the annual orphan festival by the Lutheran Home Finding Society of Iowa with Rev. W. G. Ditzen of Omaha and Rev. H. M. Zagel speaking. Several tots awaited adoption as a large crowd attended.
James Schroeder of Des Moines jailed in Ottumwa on reckless driving charges after his car struck Irene Woods of Drakesville one mile south of the city. Woods suffered broken wrists. Schroeder said he was blinded by oncoming lights of a tar truck.
The Iowa Willkie for President headquarters opened at 310th street Des Moines. Willard D W Archie Shenandoah president of clubs said clubs are forming in nearly every county. The clubs are non partisan and seek support from Democrats and independents who back Mr Willkie. H J Metcalf will oversee the Des Moines office.
Ray V. Moss of Waterloo won the Towa Gladiolus society bronze medal at Algona Gladiolus Show's fourth annual display with 17 points. L Perkins of Estherville placed second with 308 points as over 2,100 entries were shown by 36 exhibitors from across Iowa.
Iowa City announces a winter program at the University of Iowa featuring three war correspondents including Pierre von Paasen and Jay Allen. Theater, lectures, and concerts highlight the schedule with Vernelia Otis Skinner on November 4 and Nobel laureate Sigurd Lundseth lecturing in December. Louis Symphony Orchestra returns for two concerts with Milstein on February 6 and Hertha Glaz on December 11. Bartlett and Roson piano duo open March events.
In Davenson police prevented hecklers from interrupting Ella Bloor 78 chairman of the Pennsylvania Communist party as she urged complete organization of all workers to promote more wealth. Police halted pamphlet sales for their party candidate Karl Brower after a hall cancellation led them to hold the meeting in Washington park.
President Roosevelt nominates Claude Wickard of Indiana to replace Henry A. Wallace as secretary of agriculture. Wallace resigns to campaign for vice president. Paul H. Appleby of Iowa named to succeed Wickard as undersecretary. Appleby born in Missouri and grew up in Newton with ties to Grinnell College and Des Moines Register.
Thursday marks Wellman big day with thousands assembling for entertainment including visitors from Washington. The feature is the 150‑member Wellman pageant The Romance of Thanksgiving at Wellman park, a centerpiece of the turkey industry celebration, shown Wednesday and Thursday evenings with other events like soap box derby and pet parade.
W. A. Erbe principal of Washington High School sets August 27 28 and 29 as registration days for all students who have not registered or wish to change registration. Hours are 8 to 12 and 1 to 5 p m for new students and those needing consultation.
Brighton reports funeral services for Eugene Morgan 11 held at 2 PM at Brighton Methodist Church with Rev E S Hebner officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. James Riley 73 of Ottumwa dies after strokes. funeral Wednesday 2:30 PM at Bidwell home with Rev R E Hebner. interment Hillcrest Cemetery. Survived by wife Eliza Menefee, a granddaughter Ana Hoff, four mothers, and many relatives.
Automa like temperatures persisted in Washington over the weekend and into today. Sunday's high reached 75 degrees with a 52 degree low last night. This afternoon's temperature hovered around 65 degrees. Rainfall Saturday evening totaled 0.15 inches.
