James Miller aged two, son of Mr and Mrs Louis Miller farm residents near Beryington, died from burns after he fell into a pail of hot water emptied from a washing machine. He was playing near his mother who was washing at the time.
Estherville county attorney Harry Coffie of Emmet county resigned his office to devote time to flight training in the civil aviation course at Estherville junior college. Coffie also said he wishes to have more time for private law practice. No successor has been named.
Rev. R. T. Fine of Burlington was reelected district elder by the annual conference of Free Methodist churches meeting at John Fletcher college. Bishop William Pearce of Titusville presided. E. P. Boyd of Los Angeles is the conference evangelist.
A package with infantile paralysis serum flew from Des Moines to Waterloo for Mrs Anne Tarkett an expectant mother in a Waterloo hospital. Lt Eugene Smith of Waterloo piloted the flight after taking serum from Dr B K Vaubel director of the Iowa health department serum center. By Thursday her condition was reported fair following administration.
Anti conscription leaders in the senate began a drive to postpone consideration of the Burke Wadsworth draft bill until the 77th Congress convenes in January. Several opponents expect strong support for the delay as both chambers were in recess for Willkie’s acceptance address in Elwood Indiana.
A Wellman delegation led by a 40 piece high school band visited Washington yesterday to promote the upcoming pageant. The parade around the square entertained a good sized crowd with several tunes provided by the snappy uniformed group.
A Croydon woman described her distress after an air raid when she went to change her baby's diaper and found a machine gun bullet riddled nappy on the clothes line in the back garden.
Rev. bo B Predmund resigns as pastor of the Baptist church in Washington after three years. He announced the move at a quarterly meeting and will leave about a month from now. The minister plans to reveal his new location in about two weeks. Predmund arrived in October and will depart in September, ending nearly three years of steady church growth and strong community ties.
Nettie H. McLaughlin died at about 2 o clock this morning at 221 East Main street after a stroke five and a half years ago. She and her sister Carolyn Hamilton had lived in Washington county area and she was active in church and Red Cross. Funeral 3 PM Sunday at Sherman’s funeral home with Dr F F Eastwood officiating. burial in Bim Grove cemetery. She is survived by son Donald, sisters Mrs Hugh H. McCleery and Mrs W McLaughlin and Carolyn Hamilton, and three grandchildren Robert Virginia Mary Rita Me.
Don Radda of Cedar township entered a 20 ft 38 in stalk, topping competitors in the Journals Washington county tall corn event and likely to figure in the state contest. Earnie Hole and local residents followed with 13 ft plus stalks as prizes of 10 5 and 3 dollars were awarded.
Word arrived of the death of S. W. Stone of Sioux City aged 86. A brother of the late J. M. Stone of Ainsworth, he died this morning. Funeral and burial will be in Sioux City.
Mr and Mrs J E Perry of Osceola will arrive tomorrow for an over Sunday visit with the Frank Shepherd family.
Laughlin mourns the death of her husband on August 5 1920. A brother, Dr. H B Hamilton of Omaha Nebraska, died last October.
At Ottawa desk, Air Marshal W A Bishop is credited with transforming the Canadian air force from its antiquated state to a force able to aid Great Britain. During World War I he downed the German ace Manfred von Richtofen.
Benteco opens its seventh market in the past year at the Morri son building on the north side of the square in a redecorated former Graham store. The self service supermarket doubles merchandise and space, with a larger meat and produce department and a doubled sales force. Dale Fuhr remains manager. Benteco operates bakery, produce, fruit and meat warehouses in Iowa Illinois and Missouri.
County supervisors vow a concerted effort to eradicate marihuana or hemp weed in the county in coordination with state and federal anti narcotic departments and the NYA. Publicity has shown few weed reports, but residents are urged to destroy any plants found on their property or nearby highways.
President Roosevelt disclosed that the United States is negotiating with the British empire for naval and air bases to strengthen Western Hemisphere defenses, especially around the Panama Canal. He said discussions with Canada are separate and that U S army and navy officers are in Great Britain as observers of hostilities.
Mrs Justine Owen died at Richland yesterday afternoon from a heart condition. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 am at Jones funeral home with Dr H C Whiting of Brighton and Fairfield in charge. Burial at Hill Crest Cemetery Brighton. Surviving are three daughters Mrs M J Heasseltine Mrs W O Morgan and Mrs Marion S George seven grandchildren one great grandchild two sisters and one brother. Mr Owen died February 6 1936. one child died in infancy.
A massive explosion wrecked the No 1 gelatine house at the Atlantic powder plant dynamite division in Joplin Missouri. Five or six workers are missing and feared dead as officials withhold details and unknown cause. The plant was reportedly producing war material for Great Britain.
Cars driven by Phil Berman of Minneapolis and Nathan Slobin of Detroit were involved in an accident just west of Washington yesterday. Berman had stopped on the street when the collision occurred and both drivers were reported uninjured.
The 4 H Achievement Show next Monday to Wednesday will feature about 18 Hereford, five Angus, and one Shorthorn baby beeves, plus two purebred beef heifers. Dairy entries total 19 head with several Guernsey, Holstein, Ayrshire, and Jersey heifers. Lambs and swine dominate divisions, with 12 head of lambs and 10 to 13 market swine litters. Busby Building hosts the setup as leaders move equipment from Emmet Hayes barn.
Willkie, back home in Indiana, goes into seclusion in Bushville and prepares for his Elwood acceptance speech. Thousands greet him as crowds line roads to his wife Edith’s hometown. Roosevelt plans a defense-focused schedule and will not hear Willkie’s radio broadcast tomorrow.
A collision on road 92 near the Jugenheimer filling station involved a car and a machine driven by Slobin. No injuries were reported, but both vehicles suffered damage estimated between 125 and 150 dollars.
Dr John A Simpson of Oak Park Illinois notified Washington by wire this afternoon that he would be glad to accept the invitation to speak at the union service in Central park Sunday evening. The service is in charge of the Washington Y M C A with Secretary Leigh Soule announcing hopes Simpson may deliver the sermon. If the plan fails, Soule will speak. In case of unfavorable weather the service moves to the United Presbyterian church. Laymen participate with Carl Hedges presiding and Scripture read by Stanly Zager.
London reports say Herman planes bombed the city with heavy losses to German aircraft and a colossal toll expected from the raid. Berlin claimed thousands of planes engaged as battle raged over metropolitan targets near the Thames docks amid censorship and uncertain outcomes.
In Knoxville Iowa three inmates George Shell 33 Shelly Cowman 26 and Elwood Lee 39 escaped from the Marion county jail overnight after sawing two bars from a jaift window. Night Marshal Mel Parks found the break at 3 am. A prior escape by Alfrey Taylor using the same method occurred two weeks earlier.
All county women interested in Willkie for president are invited to a 2:30 PM Wednesday meeting in the G A R room at the courthouse. Mrs R J Dawson chairs the arrangement with Mrs T A Michels assisting as county vice chairman. Michels will discuss the Philadelphia convention Willkie’s acceptance speech and Willkie events in Elwoods and Des Moines.
