Eugene Murphy, a one year old farm lad, died from injuries after a manure spreader bolted while he rode it at his farm home a mile and a half south of Dike. The wheels passed over his chest as he was thrown from the implement.
In Anamosa a brother and sister were chosen as Jones County health champions. Alice Benadom aged 15 and John Benadom aged 19, children of Mr and Mrs Albert Benadom of Olin, achieved scores of 99.2 percent and 98.8 percent respectively.
A new rural fire truck is funded by volunteers and local merchants and farmers. The unit features a 400 gallon per minute centrifugal pump a 200 gallon supply tank two extension ladders 26 and 14 feet fire axes picks and a chemical supply tank for gasoline fires.
A 17 year old Sioux City newspaper carrier, Stanley Anderson, preached at Grace Reformed Church while the pastor was away on vacation. He described feeling warm in the hot church. He is a rising senior at Central Sioux City High School set to graduate next January. Also noted: Mt Pleasant reports electing three faculty members at Iowa Wesleyan. Prof E Wayne Hilmer named dean of education. Dr Harry D Henry, president, announced.
Five hundred farmers from Iowa and Minnesota heard Congressman William Lemke assault the Wallace farm program at a Union party picnic in Fort Dodge. He labeled Wallace as one of the few lemons Iowa ever produced.
Davenport report states John Err Huntley, 47, of Omaha Nebraska, died from a basal skull fracture after an unidentified man attacked him on the Quinlan ferryboat landing. Verify: The article notes the suspect is unknown and the incident occurred at the landing. Huntley was taken to a local hospital where he died.
Gunder Johnson of New Sharon declares he is 104, citing a passport from age 47 as proof. Pats Johnson of Sioux Rapids, aged 102, also asserts a senior record, while Te'nean of Sioux Rapids contests the claim.
Two weekend crashes in the county involved passing attempts. Gilbert Reed of Ottumwa sideswiped Walter Hote near West Chester injuring Reed. Hote’s car fenders were damaged. A Wayland pickup driven by Henry De Ment passed and collided with Ed Downs of Richmond near Kalona, badly shaking Mrs. Downs as the pickup ditched.
Terrific explosion rocks Shanghai aside. Dollar Day sales set for Thursday August 19 in Washington. Chamber of Commerce sponsors one day event with hundreds of items at a dollar each to clear summer stock, with ads in Tuesday's Journal and heavy shopper turnout anticipated.
The Iowa State Fair will feature 39 bands and choruses across eight days and seven nights, nearly doubling last year’s participation and marking the largest turnout in fair history. Ten Iowa W F A bands from ten communities join Cervone’s Concert Band of Chicago and other ensembles in the lineup.
Troop F 113th Cavalry arrives by special train at 7 30 am in Washington returning from Camp Dodge where they trained with other cavalry units for two weeks. Most men returned in good health with minor illnesses or injuries. Washington contributed 58 of 60 enlisted, led by Captain Jay Brown with Lieutenants Walter G Conner Max Donaldson.
Miss Margaret Roach 41 longtime East Pleasant Plain resident died at 8 last evening after a period of illness and a recent operation. Funeral services set for Tuesday at St Joseph's church East Pleasant Plain conducted by Rev KE Seidel with burial in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Survived by four brothers Will Fairfield David Cantril Thomas Russell Martin Ottumwa and three sisters Mary McDermott Katie McDavitt Ellen Roach.

Mrs. Fred Kephart of Washington will bid for the Iowa state farming and grain raising championship at the Des Moines State Fair. He competes with nineteen others from 41 sections for a total prize of 1565 dollars. Exhibits will show grains, hay and farm products from the past year as the 1937 champion is chosen.
Opal Sturgell an 18 year old Berea College sophomore was fatally shot on campus while walking with friend William Anderson. Police say George Wells a 20 year old Sophomore had threatened her life prior to the shooting.
Wendall Boyer of Chicago and his wife will hold special meetings at the Foursquare tabernacle Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Mr. Boyer, with two companions, previously conducted meetings here for Rev W J Stevens of this church.
The Community Band of Huxley, Slater Playground Band, and Dallas Center band join for an outdoor concert in the park. Local residents gather for a family friendly evening with performances by multiple youth and adult musicians.
John F. Younkin 96 oldest Riverside resident and last Civil War veteran in the community died Saturday evening at Mercy hospital Iowa City after a week there. He enlisted at 22 in the 24th Town Volunteer Infantry and fought in major battles including Magnolia Hill Champion Hill and Cedar Creek. He never married and lived with his sister Naficy until her death, remaining active with daily town trips and Democratic sympathy. He kept up with news and was noted as the oldest automobile owner in Washington County.

Funeral services for Al Fields were conducted Saturday at L A Jones funeral home by Rev. Carl W Klein. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery with pallbearers Howard Sitler Gene Breitenbach John Dodd Clyde Putnam Merk Pratt and S W Living.
Albert R. Gonder, 47, of Des Moines, and his brother Russell Rogers, 45, of Wilmington, Del., meet in New York after 41 years apart. They plan to search for a third brother, Fred, last heard from at 16, with the story tracing back to an orphanage in Peoria and a farm near Washington, Iowa. Rogers became a structural engineer with DuPont.

Walter Wilson aged 27 died at Washington county hospital after illness. Funeral services at L A Jones with Rev M C Carstensen officiating and burial in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born in Washington to George and Alma Wilson and survived by his mother two sisters a brother and two half sisters.
Madrid reports three rebel columns advancing on Santander through hostile terrain as six key villages fell to the rebels, signaling a widening advance in northern Spain.
The funeral of Mrs. Fannie Koehler was held at the United Presbyterian church in Ainsworth Saturday afternoon. Rev. S. Fred Sharpe led the service, assisted by Rev. Myers of Newark, N Y. An Ainsworth mixed quartet provided music. Pallbearers were John, George, Peter and Edme Koehler, Martin Westen and Meint Koehler Jr. Burial followed in Aigeworth cemetery.
SHANGHAI August 16 An explosion of earthquake proportions rocked the international settlement tonight as Japanese and Chinese troops clashed in the fiercest fighting since the city became a battlefield. The blast caused panic among thousands of foreigners as heavy fighting escalated. More American marines and British troops arrived to safeguard civilians while the Japanese naval bombardment intensified.
The two o'clock reading reached 99 degrees, five degrees above the month’s previous peak.
Washington August 15 Congress drifted toward adjournment by Saturday with plans to confirm Senator Hingo Black to the Supreme Court and pass a bill to close tax loopholes and finalize the 700 million housing act. Postponed measures included farm crop control, wage and hour, anti lynching and government reorganization bills until the next session.
Norman Baker was released after serving a one day sentence in the Muscatine county jail for practicing medicine without a license. He paid a $50 fine, pleaded guilty through counsel, and addressed about 300 supporters as he left. He then announced plans to move the Baker hospitals from Muscatine to Eureka Springs Arkansas.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Maxwell hosted guests over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Water of Davenport were among those visiting.
