A Miss Kelley driving near Primghar lost a front wheel which disappeared after a brake stop. A days long search ended when a letter revealed the wheel had bounced into a pasture and killed a 60 pound hog, resolving the curious incident.
The night school running in Fairfield will continue this year with Professor Jorgenson in charge. Classes are organized for 15 members and nursery courses will be offered in certain city grade school buildings.
A $1000 gift to the P E O at Mt Pleasant honors Ella Stewart a founder of P E O Iowa Wesleyan. Harry Stewart of El Paso Texas sent the funds to the national office. The committee plans to use the money for a fitting memorial in the PELO building, likely to establish an historical department in Memorial hall.
Iowa issues a purchase of 1300 gallons from the Council Bluffs Grape Growers association for retail sale in state stores. The action aligns with a policy to patronize Iowa industry wherever possible.
Henry Wallace says the drought cutting food production need not cause great alarm. He asserts supplies will be sufficient and urges calm though the nation faces shortages. Continued on page 8.
Dixie Dugan, the popular funnies heroine, shown as a working girl facing real-life problems. The Journal announces her daily drawings by John Striebel starting next Monday as a welcoming new feature in American homes.
Des Moines reports show hog prices at a new Iowa high of $6.30 per hundredweight as demand remains strong and receipts stay light. A week of gains pushes the top price for pigs 200 to 290 pounds to $6.30, with 11,800 head received at Iowa and southern Minnesota markets, about half of last year’s.
At a southeastern Iowa turkey producers meeting a three man committee was named to coordinate with other regions in forming a state organization for turkey men. Members include Russell Lynn, Ow Zimmerman, and Bert McKeehan. The group aims to create a quality, self supplied market for eggs and hatchlings and to reduce reliance on out of state sources.
In Chicago the bus strike escalated when non striking employee Harold Fegan, 34, was struck in the face by ball bearings from a sling shot while his double deck carriage halted to safety. Police escorts patrolled terminals as strike leaders deny violence.
At daylight five separate baseball games begin under the Imperial hotel window and continue all day. Harvard is due to arrive tomorrow to face Japanese colleges, with expectations focusing on English pronunciation rather than wins.
Justice of the Peace J R Bovee placed Harold Beatty under bonds of 200 dollars on a complaint by Vernon Tucker who alleged Beatty threatened him.
Trinity Lutheran Church will observe its annual mission festival on Sunday August 19 with two services at 1030 a m and 240 p m Guest preachers include Res F J Oetens of Oskaloosa and Rev P L Bornhoeft from Cedar Rapids The noon meal will be served in the church basement Visitors from nearby congregations are expected and attendances are welcome.
Washington Aug 17 PWA approved allotments totaling 24 540 000 for 215 non federal projects. Administrator Harold L Iekes announced including 35 500 for University of Iowa buildings and noted the 400 000 000 Congress appropriated for the PWA is virtually depleted.
London Ontario August 17 Rich Labatt wealthy brewer was released by abductors before dawn and appeared at the Royal George hotel in Toronto. Police indicated a break in the search and the ransom of 150000 was not paid. Labatt, weak and shaken, was placed under medical care after reuniting with family.
The board of supervisors will inventory county home property next Monday as the new manager and matron Mr and Mrs Rod Van Dordin begin work earlier than planned. They bring ten years of experience from Des Moines county and Henry county homes near Mt Pleasant. Mrs Della Miller remains temporarily assisting with duties.
Notice asks for used magazines not too old to be left in the women's rest room at city hall. Readers from out of town value the space but seek up-to-date reading material and are asked to leave magazines with matron Mrs. W. H. Fulton.
The Washington Municipal Band under Milburn A. McKay performs Saturday in Central Park. William Stewart tenor soloist, with portions featuring marches no tecto norma yoke songs and sacred pieces plus light novelty numbers and popular tunes.
County auditor Miss Ethel Grecian announces next year’s tax budget of 222 861 dollars with a public hearing planned for September 19 at ten in the morning. The total levy rises from 202 333 to 222 861 dollars due to a 20 000 increase in the poor fund.
Des Moines reports show Iowa farmers are about 12.5 million dollars better off in 1934 due to crop values, market prices, and AAA payments. Corn oats hay and alfalfa lead the gain with rising livestock values boosting total farm buying power beyond 1933.
The Iowa Federation of Labor threatens a general walkout at the state fair. Union members will be barred from grounds and picket lines of several hundred workers form at the gates. J C Lewe, head of the federation, announced plans and notices were sent to unions and legislators. An appeal urged members to refuse patronage while NRA working conditions and union wages are demanded for skilled workers.
