Federal judge halts Turner carnival gaming crackdown

Polk County District Court Judge Leo Oxberger issued a temporary injunction blocking Attorney General Richard Turner from enforcing Iowa gambling statutes until their constitutionality is tested. The order takes effect immediately and lasts until Aug. 28 with a hearing set, preserving the status quo ahead of the Iowa State Fair opening. Turner vowed to appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court seeking a stay to permit enforcement.

Registration Day Set for Washington District Students

Washington Community School District reminds all students that August 18 marks registration for the 1972 73 term. Report to assigned buildings between 8 a.m. and 3 30 p.m. A registration schedule based on last names appeared in the August 10 Evening Journal special section. New student parents should enroll before August 18 at the school office. Orientation for new students and seventh graders is Thursday at 1 30 p.m. at Washington Junior High School. Kevin Koehn arrives as program director at the Washington YMCA, succeeding Jeff Buhr.

Clark reports North Viet Nam damage from U S air raids during Hanoi tour

Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark told a Senate subcommittee of extensive damage to North Vietnamese dikes and facilities he witnessed on a 600 mile tour. He described bombed schools hospitals and homes and warned of evacuated cities and frequent air alerts in Haiphong.

Elderly Texans murdered on East Texas farm

In Lindale Texas Sam Lott 79 and wife Gladys 69 were found beaten to death in their dim frame house. Neighbors said the couple were gentle and relied on community help. Texas Rangers and sheriff officials say the killer used a 2 by 4 and a hammer to murder them likely Monday night.

Diers Injured After Car-Trailer Collision Near Brighton

Everett Diers, driving a pickup, was injured when he attempted to pass a tractor pulling a mixer grinder driven by Merlyn Anderson on the Brighton Germanville road five miles south of Brighton. The tractor was damaged. Diers was taken to a doctor for treatment. Mt. Pleasant Highway Patrol investigated.
